Re: CD burning problem
I've tried all that stuff, changing the IDE cable for a different one, swapping over the Master/Slave jumpers (so the drives are effectively reversed), and it didn't help. Anyway, took it back to the store, they gave me a replacement straight away. All I needed to say was that it wasn't reading or writing (not working as advertised
).
I've now got the exact same make and model, but a brand new drive. So far, it's doing pretty well. I've been doing some tests on it the past couple of days:
Passed - Reading store-bought CD-ROMs
Passed - Reading DVD+RW burnt on another machine
Passed - Burning brand new DVD+RW (read test ok)
Passed - Erasing DVD+RW
Passed - Burning new DVD-R
Passed - Burning new CD-R
Intermittent - Burning on previously used (and erased) DVD+RW
Failed - Playing movie DVDs
The first time I burnt onto that previously used +RW, it burned, said OK but other drives said the disc was an unrecognized format. The second time, it burned to completion, ejected the disc then immediately closed the tray and started formatting it again! O.o
The third burn was successful; all files read on the other PC and they were valid files - not just blank ones.
Basically, I'll keep on doing test burns (when I can get on the computer), and see what happens. If the drive dies within a week, it's back to the store again - this time for a different brand
