Ok....what does the "32-bit device drivers are not supported on Windows XP Professional x64 Edition" mean?? Its late/early so I might be having a brain-fart, but does that mean I will have to have hardware that has 64bit drivers or I'm screwed???

But what about older devices? I guess they could be made obsolete for 64-bit operating systems...

You will need specifically written 64-bit drivers for 64bit XP

Otherwise you will be unable to use that hardware...

So...to realize the benefits of a 64bit CPU, you need the WinXP Pro 64. ugh.....(<mumble to self> where the hell is that 386????)

Right now there is no point in running the 64 bit version of Windows because there are almost no 64 bit applications that actually see any benefit from running in 64 bit mode...

Of course this should change, but how long will it take...

I am running Windows 2000 on my two AMD64 systems, one Opteron 170 the other already has a nice thread here

in a year you will have to worry about whether you want 64bit vista or not.

Excellent point - which, of course, raises another dilemma.

Should one, if building a machine today, spend $330 for an Opteron with 64-bit support, or $230 for an (essentially) equally-fast, but much more energy efficient, Intel Yonah, which does not have EM64T?

This is an even worse dilemma, with an even greater price and power difference, if one compares the two 2P, quad-core equivalents - ie. a dual opteron 26x vs dual Xeon LV. In this case, the 64-bit option becomes more difficult to defend.

                ...

PS. As for performance increase while using less than 4096MB RAM - I can't say I've found it to be noticeable, at least, not when comparing 32-bit vs 64-bit versions of Suse.

                  hahahahaha

I must add though.....there has been a lot of good info posted about my two questions and I do appreciate it. The headache is just for dramatic effect.

Use Linux if you want 64-bit machine for serious work. Existing open-source drivers are just recompiled for 64-bit and open-source applications too.

Hey...I'm lucky to just have a box with Mandrake installed. I haven't even thought of doing anything like that yet.

I might just get another license for XP Pro or use this Win2k disk if mine. I still have the original Win95 disc. I thought I had Win3.11 on 3.5" around somewhere.

                        Re: Windows XP Pro 64bit

If you install a Linux distro for x86_64 architecture, someone has already compiled everything for you. In Windows, you depend on hardware manufacturer to provide drivers for 64-bit. If he does not, you can't use the hardware. Once driver source is free, it can be used on many architectures.
Anyway, Windows games are 32-bit. They will not work any better in 64-bit Windows, if at all.
