iirc they are lubricated for life from the factory. you could add grease to ones with exposed guts i guess.

I don't think they're meant to be lubricated - they rely on a certain amount of in-built friction to keep the lid/screen at the angle you open it to.

Ditto, IMO laptop hinges should never be lubed or your screen will go impotent.

they do have lube, actually. not very much, just enough to make the motion smooth.

But I disagree with you ratty - I think it's the specific materials used (nylon maybe?) that create a 'controlled friction'.

Lube, not lube.
Guess what. They aren't all the same.
Some do, some don't.
.
Same with how they achieve lid friction.
They aren't all the same for that.
I've even seen them with stacked friction discs and a belleville spring like a clutch-pack.
