    Laptop opinion needed

Ok...its that time of year again and I'm back to looking for a replacement for some of my aging equipment.

Is there such a thing as a laptop under $2000 that has 2GB ram, P4 3GHz equivelant, 256MB ATI graphics card, and a 17" 1920x1200 LCD????

Because of past experience on the desktop side of the house, I'm reluctant to go with AMD or nVidia......especially nVidia.

I've been to Dell and I can't do better than $2800.

you could make a custom system almost getting what you want but pick a 15.4in 1920x1200 with intel and Ati Or
pick an intel with 17in and nvida
the 17in with intel and nvida (you must take off alot of stuff to stay under 2 grand
the 15.4 with intel and ati base price is about $1600
just make sure you're sober when you buy or you go over budget

The closest thing I've found is the Dell. It has the resolution I'm looking for, but I have to go with the nVidia chipset. From my past experience, nVidia was a bitch to get a workable driver. Is this still the case, or have they got their shit together?

In the above cases, I'm still sitting at $2600ish. I guess I'm just going to have to suck it up and spend the $$$$$. Damn it. I'll have to see how much I'm getting back from taxes. Hopefully I'll get a good chunk back so I can still do my PI vacation.

i have never had a problems with nvidia cards. i always use the detonators from their site though, not the card manufacturer supplied drivers.

You might try hp or compaq especially the buisness grade, I buy them for my organization. The build quality is really great, and the price is right. I just went to hpshopping.com and customized the zd8000 line, 1900.00 for the specs you listed.

Yeah......$1600 for a zd8000 +$250 for 2GB from Crucial. The only thing is the 1440x900. If I go with the dv8000z, I can get 1680x1050, but I have to settle for 128MB ATI video for $1750 total.
              Dare I even add the Dell E1705??? $3000 +$370 for 2GB from Crucial. I don't think the 1900x1200 is worth $1000.

Ugh.....I hate having to settle for less than what I want.

Screw it....I need the exercise......I'll just pay extra baggage for the new desktop I'm going to build. $2000 ought to get me something pretty nice.

Actually...I'm going to head to Best Buy and see if there is a noticable difference between 1440 and 1900. If not, I'll go with the zd8000.

              Thanks for all the input.

I support Willawake. Never had a problem when using the drivers from the Nvidia site. I am curious as to how long ago you had problems and what drivers were used.

Hey davmax...it was eons ago, but you the old saying about "first impressions". Actually, the last time I did anything with nVidia was about 4 years ago.

                  Would a 256MB nVidia make a big difference over a 128MB ATI????

its too general a question, depends which gpu. Interesting to see that on the fujitsu the 256 MB HyperMemory™ for the ati chip is a total of 128 MB of dedicated video and 128 MB of shared system memory.

Yeah...I saw that. I just forgot to mention it. I don't know how that would affect overall performance, but I just don't like sharing......anything.

I'm going to hit BB today and look at the things. I wonder if BB can beat the online HP price....hmmmmm.........

                        To all the members here...

Let me tell you a little bit about what happened to my laptop (MSI GF63 THIN 11UCX model: MS-16R6) that “maybe” you know how to solve this problem.

So before this problem happened, my laptop was running smoothly. When I wanted to restart my laptop, it looked fine at first. But after I waited for this restart process to take a long time, until finally I panicked (because the restart process did not finish plus the laptop screen only showed a black screen), I immediately pressed and held the power button to force the laptop to turn off. But...
