    Re: Linux Distro suggestions

my question is getting it to work without display bugs.

i don't want ubuntu. never did.

the problem is the i915 module is broken when used on i8xx chips... an intel driver update circa mid 2010 caused the problem. the main response from ubuntu (and fedora, apparently) is "i8xx is old; blacklist it, nobody uses those anyway"

yeah... i remember that now. it doesn't make sense because EEE PCs still use that chipset. apparently the module is now called intel-agp and may be in the xf86-video-intel packages, at least in arch.

Here's a discussion in slackware, which may be closer to what you are looking for since drivers there are a bit more manual: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...etbook-806575/

        Re: Linux Distro suggestions

I used to switch distros to find a good one. Tried Red Hat, Brazilian Conectiva, Brazilian Kurumin, Debian, Slackware (loved it) and Ubuntu (don't like it).

8 years ago I found Gentoo (1.4), never switched since then. It's a bit overwhelming at first but it's well documented and the comunity is amazing. Bugs are solved fast and user support via forums is very good.

You configure something once and it stays configured the way you want.

The major problem is compiling big packages like openOffice but they have binary pre-compiled packages as well.

But if you really want a pre-compiled package based system, I'd recommend Debian itself or Slackware (although it lacks a good dependency package checker).

          Hello,

this is a very strange Problem:

Notebook hang instantly on Boot. BIOS is accesable.
Windows: instant after showing "loading circle", even Windows Boot Stick hang instant (even without installed SSD/NVME )
Linux: instantly (if Linux Boot in leagacy Mode with log messages: Machine Check exception after 0.25 sec)

          i have tried:
          - only one RAM Stick, another working RAM, both RAM channel
          - BIOS Flash to newest Version F.50, BIOS Reset
          - Memtest86 hang instant at Test 2
          - HP UEFI Diagnostic wont find...

Requests to Intel Flash Programming Tool for Linux Ubuntu x86_64
          by tsavpyn
          Dear all,
I forgot my BIOS password of my Surface Pro 3, I searched for solutions for a long time and knew that by using FPT to dump my bios to bin file and using decryptor, I can get my BIOS password.
Now I have a problem that I am unable to dump my BIOS into bin file.

My Surface Pro 3 currently runs on Ubuntu 22.04, with Secure Boot enabled and Boot From SSD Only.

I searched for FPT but there is no Linux version and none of them work.
I hereby request a copy of Intel Flash Programming Tool for Linux x64.
I would really appreciate it if anyone...

What OS are you running these days? I am down to 3 Windows workstations and one Windows Server on my LAN, everything that doesn't have a windows-specific need has been moved to Linux. Printing abilities with my large document centers are Linux's kryptonite; the reason for 2 of the Windows machines. The third machine still has Win7 on it, and isn't connected to the outside world. It has tons of software on it I use for diagnostics and updating various hardwares. My main rig is still Win10 Enterprise, so I had to vote Win10 in the poll...but I have overwhelmingly more linux machines than windows...

MS Surface Book 3 - Keyboard works only in UEFI/Linux
          by survivalbloke
This is a very weird issue which I'm having trouble finding a common thread.

The keyboard is registering keypresses in either the UEFI, or a live Linux USB environment - I used Ubuntu for testing. The keyboard backlight is lit.

The keyboard is registering keypresses in Windows or any Windows-related bootable device. For example, it does not work in Hirens Recue or a Windows 11 bootable installer.

When booted to Windows, not only is the keyboard not registering keypresses, but my USB keyboard is not either!

          USB mouse and integrated trackpad...

SPD reading/writing under Linux and/or Windows
          by keepread
          Hi all,
Where can I find the mysterious 'eeprom' kernel module that some use under Linux to read/write SPD?
I installed 'i2c-tools' and got 'decode-dimms' tool under Debian but not under Fedora, but both of them are missing the 'eeprom' module.
Also tried the SPD.exe tool from EVGA, which correctly lists all of the DIMM slots but reads zeroes from all of them.
Basically I need to dump SPD from some modules that were sold to me as DDR-1866 but are made of DDR-1600 chips, and they do not work. There is no access to RAM clock rate in the BIOS, so I am SOL unless I can rebin...
