Got an SS59G V2 here that I want to update the BIOS on. Got the AWDFlash and the BIOS from Shuttle's website, and AWDFlash keeps telling me the file's part number doesn't match the system. It has an FS59 V2 motherboard. Should I just force a flash?

Re: Shuttle SS59G V2- BIOS won't update
If it says it doesn't match, it means it doesn't match. Find another one or leave it alone.
I had to ask someone who had a programmer to reflash my BIOS chip after i made the same mistake on a friend's ECS board. Turns out ECS put the WRONG BIOS onto their site.Originally posted by PeteS in CARemember that by the time consequences of a short-sighted decision are experienced, the idiot who made the bad decision may have already been promoted or moved on to a better job at another company.

hold TAB so see the POST instead of the logo.
as soon as you see the POST, hit pause.
BIOS seems to be the same for the FS59 and the FS59 V2 boards.

edit: they also have a couple flash tools in the utilities folder.

I just bought a Pentium D 930 to try in the system. Should give it a nice performance boost. Too bad it only has AGP.

Make sure you've got a good cooler on it..
Pentium D = Pentium 4 Prescott x2
worst of the worst heat/performance wise..
The Pentium D 930 is 95W (65nm). Older ones were 130W, based on 90nm. The system is rated for 95W CPU's, but probably no higher. In fact the manual only lists up to Pentium D 920, but the 930 is identical in everything but the multiplier. Should work fine I suppose.

Re: Shuttle SS59G V2- BIOS won't update
hm.. i might try some bios hacking like in the good old days (making hidden functions visible/working with bios editors.. sort of like what the "cheepo bios" did to the K7S5A way back when..)
if the chip is soldered down or you don't wanna risk it tell me.
otherwise i'd have to look for the tools in my backups

Re: Shuttle SS59G V2- BIOS won't update
hmm.. i've looked at both files with bios editors.
good thing you didnt flash the SS59U00T BIOS.. it seems to be the right one (apart from the BIOS ID being different), so a forced flash would've probably worked out allright, but they removed shitloads of options from the BIOS..
i then took the SS59S00T BIOS and edited it. made a couple hidden options visible and selectable again, and did what shuttle did with the "newer" SS59U00T BIOS and simply removed the logo/splash screen image completely, as there was no option to enable/disable that logo in the BIOS that i could un-hide and make selectable.
changes:
- boot splash screen / logo removed completely (attached to this post just for the heck of it)
- un-hid typematic rate settings (keystroke repeat settings)
- un-hid RAM settings "auto config" item
- onboard video memory default is now 32MB (instead of 128MB)
- un-hid "graphics engine clock" submenu (changing onboard GPU clockspeed now possible ; doubt it'll affect performance much (if it actually works that is))
- un-hid "IDE Burst Mode" setting
- un-hid USB Keyboard & USB Mouse support settings
- init display first is now defaulted to "AGP, then Onboard" (instead of PCI)
- un-hid CPU temperature shutdown submenu
PS: nothing has been removed from the edited BIOS (apart from the spash screen). Both BIOS files (SS59U00T and SS59S00T) are pretty much identical, so all shuttle did was remove the logo and hide a dozen or so options in the BIOS..
PPS: you should definitely recap the entire board for that Pentium D. shuttle is well known to use junk caps like OST and the like on their motherboards. and they still do in the brand new barebones

I did have to replace several bad G-Luxon caps to get it running. I just contacted TopCat about making a cap kit for it, so I'll probably replace the rest too.
The worst part is, there are some bent pins in the CPU socket. They must not be too bad though, because it works fine. I might try to straighten them out a bit better though, if I can get a good magnifying glass and some small tools.

Re: Shuttle SS59G V2- BIOS won't update
i used CBROM 1.98 to delete (and export) the .bmp splashscreen and MODBIN6 V2.03.02 (within DOSBox, as DOS software won't run at all in Win7 64Bit) to un-hide the settings and edit some default settings (like the default amount of RAM used by the onboard video card)
both tools attached if someone wants to play aroundAttached FilesLast edited by Scenic; 02-28-2011, 02:22 AM.
