Re: what tool identifies bad caps on live circuit?
There is one exception you can use an ESR meter to measure the ESR of batteries since their ESR goes up as they age. This is especially true of sealed lead acids.
I would qualify a battery as a live circuit of sorts.
But yes the only way to measure live caps is with a scope checking the ripple.
I had a Uniden phone from 03 it's handset was humming like crazy to the point where I could barely hear someone on the line. The wart had a 470uf 16V cap in it ESR measured 7.8 I thought it was kind of high. But before I condemned it I checked the ripple it was so bad it was almost as if I was looking at pulsed DC. The GP replacement cap which I checked before installation later had an ESR of 0.32. The old cap showed no outward signs of failure.
As you can see measuring ESR and if you're unsure about the proper ESR checking ripple can help sniff out most caps.Last edited by Krankshaft; 08-01-2010, 09:19 PM.Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either.Comment

HI all,
I am working on some boards where all 100+ SMD caps have to be replaced (yes, they actually went bad!). I found a workflow to remove them comfortably (two irons, pre-heater and extra hot air for larger ones on ground planes).
When it comes to soldering them back, I add solder to one pad and then I use a plastic tweezer to keep them in the right place while I solder that leg.
The tweezer works - but I was wondering if there is a more "dedicated" tool or whether someone has a better idea. If it was for a bunch of caps then who cares. But because... -

Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow.
But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though.

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.
I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.
I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.
The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.
