    Help with lead spacing and some other things

    Hey everyone.

    I'm trying to shop for some replacement capacitors for the first time. I looked through the sticky FAQ threads but still have some questions.

    1.) First, are there certain standard categories of lead spacing? Like 3.5mm, 5mm, etc? I flipped over my motherboard and measured between the leads with a regular ruler. It looked about 3.75mm for me, but when browsing DigiKey I found only 3.5mm or 5.00mm after I entered the capacitance and voltage that I need.

    2.) Would the UCC KY and the Nichicon HE be good enough? I want to replace a bunch of 1000uF, 6.3V caps made by GSC. They make up the majority of caps on my mobo (asus A7V8X-LA). The KY and HE are both listed in the "what to buy" sticky but they are not the lowest on ESR.

    3.) What is GSC? Is that a crappy company?

    Thanks in advance for help

    2) What is the height and diameter of the original caps?

      Re: Help with lead spacing and some other things

      1.. from what I have seen, they are usually the same spacing for the same size caps. but there is no certain size for all caps. Example is caps with a 1000 uf rating should all have the same lead spacing, no matter if it is 8 mm or 10 mm in diameter, but at the same time, dont expect that a cap that is 10 mm diameter has the same lead spacing as a cap that may be 40 mm in diameter. If you stay with around the same rating as what you are replacing, then the lead spacing should be the same.

      2.. You want to stay with 105 degree and a low or ultra low ESR cap for motherboards. I believe that Nichicon HE and UCC KY caps are not low enough of an ESR rating to hold up over time. I think that they are made for (and better used in) other things like audio equipment, but i could be wrong.

      3.. I do believe that it is a crappy company..

        @retiredcaps:
        Well, the dimensions of the caps are, as far as I can tell by measuring with a simple ruler, 8mm in diameter and looks like 12mm height.

        @kaniki
        Alright, thanks for the info.

          It looks like for a 8mm x 12mm cap, 3.5mm is the general lead spacing dimensions.
