    Power Supply (PSU) Questions

I've got a couple of Old FSP-300s that failed the Power-Good Test on my inexpensive tester, so I tore one apart and removed the caps. There were six and all were bulging. They were all Fuhiyyu. One of them is 3300 10v but the can size is 10mmx35mm.
Where do you get those? The big axial resistor has the skin peeled off it. Should I re-coat it with something? Can't see what the banding is but I believe the body was pink.
    Any ideas?

Also have a Zippy Emacs H2-6460P EPS that was "racing" on startup. I have several others of these that work, so I know this one's got a problem.

Shortly after you boot up, the fan races, then slows down, then races faster, then shuts down and finally the whole thing just shuts down.

Tried this with several boards, so I know its the PSU at fault.

Removed the cover - there are no bulging caps at all. Incredibly heavy-duty contruction inside. Any idea what could be causing these symptoms?

    Re: Power Supply (PSU) Questions

The consensus around here is that the big Fuhjyyus aren't honestly rated. Somebody (I don't remember who) measured one once that was supposed to be 4700uF and if I remember correctly it was actually around 3000uF. So chances are yours isn't even close to 3300uF. You may, however, be able to stuff a 12.5mm diameter cap in it's place. They usually have the same lead spacing (5.0mm), so it's just a matter of clearance around the edges. Something like this would work: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/Dk...name=P12735-ND and since you know you'll have clearance height wise you can probably up the capacitance a notch or two.

For the resistor - can you open another of the same type of PSU (you said you had multiple) and see what the value is? Or if somebody else here has one they might be able to check for you.

The Zippy...my guess would be the temperature sensor or thermal protection circuit is malfunctioning. If this is screwed up it would cause the fan to go crazy (assuming it's a temperature controlled unit), and then put itself into thermal shutdown, even though it's not too hot. That's just a guess though, it could be something totally unrelated. Somebody else might have more insight...

      Topcat sells the 10v + 16v samxon RS series that are 10mm x 30mm 3300uf.

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
        by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

        Assuming...

Desoldering gun station modified to use a 18 volt @ 20 amp switching power supply
        by sam_sam_sam
I have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump

One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy...

Modification to a ZD-987 desoldering/soldering station using a external switching power supply
        by sam_sam_sam
I have been working on this concept for quite some time now with limited success but recently I found a switching power supply that is setup for the voltage that this soldering station needs to operate at however it also needs part of the secondary circuit from the original switching power because you need several voltage rails

I once tried to get a ZD-915 desoldering station to work on a 18 volt battery power supply but unfortunately things did not go well but I did find a work around but I might try this idea again but going at a little differently more about this another time...

Hi, Can we use SMPS Bench Power Supply for Laptop troubleshooting?
        by shamsudeen
Hi all, I just need to know that, can i use SMPS type power supply to test and short circuit detection on a laptop motherboard?
I saw 95% of repair guys are using only Linear bench power supply. linear bench power supply is pricy, thats why i planned to get one SMPS supply.

i know that in linear power supply the noise will be very low comparing to SMPS supply....

        Russound CA4 Power Supply Repair
        by CMCM
        Hello Everybody,

Trying to repair a power supply from a Russound CA4 Multizone Controller (picture attached)

Russound no longer supports it but were kind enough to provide a schematic of the power supply (pdf attached).

The outputs marked 12v and 20v are all measuring only 1v.

The board is clicking, which I think means it is in something called hiccup mode when the flyback transformers switches because of an internal problem or something else on the board Overloading it.

The capacitors physically look clean (no bludgesor leaks) and...
