I am in the process of replacing the caps on my motherboard. All of the caps read like 22uf 16v. Do I have v or vdc on my computer? Does this mean I should replace these caps with those showing 16v also. What about the 16vdc caps would those work. I'm confused about this voltage thing. Thanks in advance

its dc
ac caps would read like more than 100v -
Re: Difference between 16v and 16vdc caps
My friend has some caps to give me and all of his say 2200uf, 6.3v and 1000uf, 6.3v and 220uf, 16v . So all of them end in the voltage part with just a "v", like the caps on the motherboard right now. Can my friends caps be used provided the temp range, etc is the same?Comment

Re: Difference between 16v and 16vdc caps
yes but you must check that the capacitors are low esr
the first thing to check is that they are 105oC and not 85oC
then you check the brand / series
if you tell me that i will tell youComment

Re: Difference between 16v and 16vdc caps
no damage, just instability
what you can do is get the caps and then look at what is written on them and we can tell you if they are good or notComment

Re: Difference between 16v and 16vdc caps
V = volts
DC = DC (direct current)
The "V" you see assumes DC.
In other words 16 v and 16 vdc are exactly the same thing.

Anything from just being unstable to exploding parts or catching on fire is possible.

I just received this info on two of the caps he has. Both are 105deg
This is what is written on each cap:
Sanyo, S.E.24, WG, 1000uf, 6.3v
Rubycon, T0229, MBZ, 3300uf, 6.3v
Does this translate into low esr or notComment

Re: Difference between 16v and 16vdc caps
Sanyo, S.E.24, WG, 1000uf, 6.3v
This is Sanyo WG series.
Ripple 1140, ESR .030
Rubycon, T0229, MBZ, 3300uf, 6.3v
This is Rubycon MBZ series.
Ripple 2800, ESR .012
Those are both premium brands and premium grade. [Very low ESR, high Ripple.]

Re: Difference between 16v and 16vdc caps
Hey Guys, Thanks for all the help. When I get the caps, then the fun starts. I need to first read more from this wonderful web site and forum. This will be my first attempt to revive a motherboard. If a set of new caps doesn't work, in the trash it goes. That's about as far as I dare to go in repairing the thing. JohnComment

If yo have Sanyo and Rubycon going bad I'd be looking at the power supply as the problem.Mann-Made Global Warming.

by momakaI know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.
For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

by eryjusHello,
First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.
I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.
I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

by Paxman_SwedeHello!
I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.
The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.
I have studied the board and...-

by captain150I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...-

Howdy folks,
The GX260 strikes again, I just now noticed that a bunch of smaller caps on the motherboard are bad.
There's no indication of what series these are, but they have the same color wrap as the HM series. They're rated at 22uf and 25v and about 5mm x 6.5mm. The only other markings are the temperature rating (105 degrees Celsius) and what I assume is a date code - A236. The data sheet for the HM series doesn't include caps with these ratings. I've attached some images of the caps themselves and where they are/were on the motherboard.
Does anyone...-
