    Caps Comparison

    Hi all,

    I was preparing a list of caps to buy when I saw this Chemi-con 2200uF 16V which costs almost five times than Panasonic .
    As you can see there are not the electric parameters on the Panasonic page (ripple current) so to compare it and Chemi-con I had to open the datasheet.
    It is not difficult but it is a waste of time to compare datasheets so I prepared a spreadsheet with the most used series and type.
    I have included most of the type I saw suggested here; I have not included all type/value and I have excluded the caps larger than 12.5mm because I have seen most of the time the space is limited.

    I don't know if there is a similar doc here, anyway I want to share it and I hope it can be useful for you.
    I have only a request: if you found errors please send me a PM so I can correct it.
    I accept also suggestions to improve it.

    Ciao
    Gianni

      Re: Caps Comparison

      Price difference makes no sense because FM is rated much better than LXY.

      ESR changes with can size, not uF.
      So when you compare caps across series to determine grades you need to go by can size.
      .
      For uF pick a range like 1000uF to 3300uF ,, then
      Pick a can size like 8x20mm or 10x20mm ,,
      Look at all the caps in a series with that size can.
      [In good brands at least]
      All the ESR/Ripple will be the same or very close for that size can.
      -
      Then using the same uF range in the series you are comparing it to look for the same can size as before.

      You can see my method is valid by looking at the second page of the FC data tables:

      It shows that all FC caps of any given can size have the same ESR/Ripple from 6.3v to 35v.
      -
      That's the page that should be used to determine/compare grades but most public data sheets don't include that page so you have to collect the information on your own from the other tables.

        Yes you are right and building the spreadsheet showed me this immediately.

        @ i4004: you are wrong 24€ for a pack with 5 caps... so one cap costs only 4.8€
        It seems to me a mistake, I can't believe they cost so much.

        By the way I have seen also this Vishay that seems quite expensive and not so good compared to Pan FM.
        From the picture the brand is Philips.

              Yes, that's where I get FC, FM, PW, and a few others from.
              Best prices for PW/FC/FM I know and they usually keep the full range in stock.

              Should note though that:
              Which is cheaper at 1-piece prices isn't always what is cheaper at 10+pc prices.
              Kind of odd but it happens a lot at digikey.

                It is very odd, with RSComponets is the opposite: for the Pan cap above if you buy 50 packs (250 caps) the price is 0.588€ against 1.13€.

                  talking about smaller quantities for both suppliers:

                  rs italy(probably simillar across the europe)-> 1pc=1.13eur (1.46048$)
                  digikey-> 1pc=0.7eur (0.95$)

                  at local distributir that carries rs catalog it's 1.8$(1.3eur) a piece...
                  at 500pcs quantity, price is about 1$ (at digikey it's about 0.3$)...
                  hehe...

                  oh yeah, chemi-con cap gianni linked is cheaper(than pana) in my catalog...so rs italy must of got it wrong....

                    That's not quite what I meant.
                    Here is a 'made up' example to explain.
                    Comparing $$ for some PW and an FC the same size (these are the same grade)

                    Say at 1pc each:
                    PW = $.50
                    FC = $.55
                    PW is cheaper.

                    But at 10pc each:
                    PW = $4.90 for 10
                    FC = $4.60 for 10
                    FC is cheaper.

                    Digikey does that a lot.

                          But, the "Capacitors" table seems to be quadrupled. Why?

                          I'd like to sort it by manufacturer but when I try, Excel errors saying "This operation requires the merged cells to be identically sized"

                            The spread sheet is generated with Excel 2003 / SP3.
                            I don't have any issues sorting it that way.

                            What are you using for Excel?
                            I don't use a Viewer, so that might be a problem.
                            I also don't use Office 2007, which might be another problem.

                            I reloaded the ZIP file after testing the XLS file.
                            Download and try it again.

                              Okay. I opened it under Office 2003 and it showed the same thing. I don't build in Excel very often, but I remembered something about this. I found it under Window-Split. Once I clicked that, the 4 pane look went away and I no longer got the sort error.

                              I then used the Window-Freeze Panes command (which I remembered I prefer- LOL), and it's fine.

                              Again, nice job!

                                by Perry Babin
                                I have a situation where a power supply is commonly abused and the 12v supply caps take a beating. They don't commonly fail but they run hot. I was thinking about going from a liquid electrolytic (Panasonic FC and Nichicon HE) to an organic polymer. The values have been 330uF. I typically use a higher-than-needed voltage to get a lower ESR. The supply is operated from 12v.

                                If not organic polymer, what would be the caps that could take the most abuse?

                                First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

                                I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

                                I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

                                The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

                                I have studied the board and...
