    Cap Selection - Technologies

    Looking for some advice tonight.

I have a motherboard with a bunch of 47u@16V SMT caps and first instinct is to use a typical aluminum cap like this:

The discussionon the Mac forum suggests looking at some "solid" caps like tantalum or ceramic or "polymer" because the better OEMs are doing that now....

Any thoughts from some cap experts here?

    Tks.

EDIT: Pkg size; looks like about 0.35" across the tabs and no plastic base like today's caps.

Any markings? What board is it? Anyway, these are usually general purpose caps of not too good quality.

      Thanks for responding!

      Markings? Just capacitance & voltage.

There are a couple of larger (size) axials, they're Nichicon, 470u@16V.

The board is the motherboard of a Mac IIci, the SMT caps are leaking now after about 25 years. I don't expect the "modern" replacements to last that long.

Being that old it will be certainly GP. You can use THT caps, just cut the leads and bend them.

              OK, thanks.

Should have some SMT Nichi replacements from Digikey tomorrow.
