Abit VP6 bad caps? (i hope)

I bought a Abit vp6 on ebay with 2 socket 370 tulatin 1ghz's. The gentleman told me that it was from a working system, but was pulled quite a while ago because the computer was acting weird. I thought maybe it was just the OS went bad, or other hardware. So i bought it, and ordered 2 heatsinks and a 512 stick of pc133 mushkin ram. It arrived, but the heatsinks were of very poor quality, so I got a refund from newegg (and i got to keep them, too ) and ordered some better quality ones for the same price. They arrived, they fit. So i seated the VP6 in the case, and hooked everything up, put in the AGP 4x Nvidia FX5200, sound blaster 16, 10/100 lan card, netgear 54G wifi card (all good because they are in the computer i'm using now,) and pushed the power button. No beep codes, all the fans spun up, but about 1 second later, I heard a loud POP, followed shortly by another. I hit the psu's power switch and ripped all the cords from the computer and pulled it out to see what happened.

Turns out two of the capacitors blew on the motherboard. All the mobo's capacitors are Jackcon, some are bowing out a little bit, may have to address those, but these two literally exploded (from the top luckily.) I hope it was just because it sat too long, and putting the power strain to run 2 1.75v processors that may still be overclocked if it ever was, and 2 80mm fans on the heatsinks was too much. I've seen bad capacitors, but I've never seen any explode, luckily no voltage regulators are out, there's no black spots on the motherboard, there was no smoke (except what I think was the hydrogen gas, correct me if i'm wrong, that built up in the caps that caused it to explode.) so hopefully I can just replace those caps, power it on, see if any more explode, and get on with finally using this mobo.

Theres a attachment of the exploded caps

i saw that vp6 on ebay.wondered what buyer would get it and have it not post.
unless you got what are a very rare cumine core cpu with heatspreader it wont work.
the vp6 does not support tualatins and the only ones that run smp are the 512k cache -s type.
post the s spec on your chips.
and a recap should fix the board.jackcon are one of the first bad caps.now referred to as junkcon.
i have rebuilt hundreds of these boards.so has topcat.
you will also want his modded bios.

1 GHz/133 FSB PIII CPUs with heat spreader are most probably Coppermines, not Tualatins. Check the S-spec or the Vcore voltage - 1.55V and below are Tualatin, 1.65V and above are Coppermine. The other possibility is an overclocked Coppermine/Tualatin Celeron running at 133 FSB instead of 100 - these can't do SMP, so that would be outright auction fraud.

cumine with heatspreader are rare.i have a pair and they are engineering samples.
the ONLY tualatin capable of smp is the -s with 512k
and the vp6 CANNOT run ANY tualatin without mods.then they are shakey at best.
we will wait for the o.p to post the s spec.

The s spec is SL5FQ for both. They both have heat spreaders.

So I just found out that they are actually coppermines.

That's one of the last Coppermine PIII steppings, so it probably has the fewest errata (mostly SMP related). Incidentally, 4 out of the 5 Coppermine PIII 1 GHz/133 that I've encountered have been CD0 stepping with heat spreader, and they've never had any issues, single with i810E/i815E or SMP with Serverworks. The lone one without the heat spreader has always had thermal issues, even after careful lapping and using Arctic Silver 3. It's either a re-marked 750/100 or one of the early 'factory-overclocks' from Intel that never ran stably at 1 GHz. I finally underclocked it to 750/100 and 1.6V Vcore in a slotket which allowed over-riding the VID as well as FSB, and it ran OK with no thermal issues after that.

              so recap it already!
last time i looked topcat had a kit for these on the badcaps.net store.
bet it runs fine after a recap.
dont run it anymore till you recap it or you run the risk of this.

It only does SMP with -S Tulatins, it will do smp with coppermines. In fact, the original manual for the VP6 dosen't say if it even does support tulatins. It says it supports 500-1000mhz pentium 3 coppermines.

the vp6 does not support tualatins...PERIOD.
there were mods and socket adaptors but they were not stable.

Got a optiplex gx150 with a CD0 1ghz in it, no heat spreader. Is there a way to tell if its a remarked or if its factory overclocked?

If it's the original Dell factory-installed CPU, then it can't be a re-marked CPU. Dell never bought gray-market CPUs, which is where the re-marks show up.

some of the d0 stepping cumines i have used have really good overclock potential.
most of the thermal issues i have seen are the result of hsf that dont sit flat on the die.
                        this is a good example.
this is a intel hsf from a retail box proc.this vp6 is unstable partly due to caps and partly due to this hsf problem

small heatsinks, thick fins and spread out, no wonder they don't work good. Did you see the ones on my vp6 up there? measure 80mmx80mm, but narrows at the bottom.

Its factory installed, shows up on cpu-z as 996mhz (132.4x7.5 or something like that.) CD0 stepping, and is a coppermine.
