    Replacing Caps--and a short story

Well...I was bored at work the other day so I went digging around to see what lost treasures were to be found. I managed to find a drawer full of Pace soldering accessories and supplies. I thought to myself "wow...I wonder if there is actually a good Pace kit around here?" There is a Pace MBT station, but it has been seriously neglected. I'm in the process of rehabing it. Anyway, I do a bit more poking around and find an old Pace PPS-200C just like the ones we had in the Corps. It was awesome. I was almost (dare I say???) giddy. I blew out the dust, turned her on, and all was well. Just had to replace the tip for the extractor. Took the VP6 in Friday to replace the caps. It took me less than 30 minutes to prepare the new caps, pull the bad caps, put in the new caps.

I couldn't believe how easy it was getting the solder out of the holes. Piss on that solder-pult POS. It was awesome. They want to throw it out. I know where is going if it comes to that. :

To make a long story short, if you have the right equipment, its incredibly easy to replace the caps, and any other component for that matter. The only thing I haven't tackled is BGA and from what I understand, you have to have a very expensive piece of equipment for that. I've done soldering under a microscope before. Nerve wracking, but interesting.

As a side note, I've been trying to find the AC cord for the station that powers the Resis-tweez, Conduc-tweez, and Strip-tweez accessories. THe Pace P/N is 7000-0005. Anybody have an idea??

Anyway, if you're having problems with your caps, give me a hollar. I actually like soldering.

    Pps-200c

Regarding your use of the PPS-200C. I've a pile of older equipment I need to rebuild (with hundreds of old caps to replace), so I purchased a PPS-200C on eBay the other day (it just arrived yesterday), and I spent about 3 hours last night cleaning it up, removing old property stickers, tape, etc., installing new rubber feet, replacing rusted screws, etc. so it's looking fairly good, and it fired up fine. I'm not familiar with all of the features on this unit, however, and hope you might be willing to give a few pointers and some explanations based on your experience.
