Hi, I have an Akai reel to reel tape deck that has a MP type of cap on the motor. I would like to change it out because I get a lot of noise through my amp when changing tape speeds. It is two caps in a can mark 2 uF and 1 uF at 250 WV AC, with 3 lugs coming out of one end. Any ideas what I can use to replace this cap. Thanks

Re: MP type cap for a tape deck electric motor
All the dual cans I found were larger in capacitance. You could get a metallized polypropylene in 1 uf and one in 2 uf and tie one end together. http://www.parts-express.com/audyn-c...citor--027-108 http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-...citor--027-414 .sigpicThe Sky Is Falling -
Re: MP type cap for a tape deck electric motor
I remember these. MP is as rho says.. metallized poly.. they don't usually fail tho. More likely cause of your big bangs and thumps is a failure of the cap (if there is one) directly across the speed switch The MP caps are there to stop the motor putting "hash" back on the power rail due to arcing on the brushes if it's a brushed motor... I've used standard mains filter caps on these with no bad results. Would be useful to know the model as some you are supposed to not change the speed when the tape is running because of the large spike on the power rail.. While you are in there.. also check the little wire from the chassis to the screen of the playback tape head.. if that comes adrift the machine is prone to picking up more mains/switching noise.Comment

by pecmanI was given an Aiwa Z-R700 from the 1990s era to look at by someone who said the twin tape deck did not work. The whole unit unit powered up ok but there was nothing from the tape deck. I had a look and found all the belts broken, I replaced the belts and then put the tape deck back into place and it still does not work. Also when I now power up the unit all the lighting on the front is very dim and the cd player and the tuner as well as the tape deck do not work. I have checked all the connections and ribbon cables again, there are no burnt or swollen capacitors. Maybe there are capacitors on...

by SolomonManAll,
Yesterday in the morning the fan was fine. Its approximately 10 years old. Its one of those high Velocity types.
In the afternoon I noticed it was not running any longer.
During the investigation, I confirmed the wiring, confirmed the 3 way switch is fine, the Capacitor measures the correct Microfarads. So I went to the Motor;
No smell of burnt and it spins very easily. I started to measured the continuity between the 6 wires.
I have included a diagram from a YouTube video I found but basically the wiring is identical. The only exception... -
I have a Quantum SuperLoader robotic tape library that uses an IBM LTO 7 tape drive which is constantly complaining that it needs cleaning. If you insert a cleaning tape, it performs the clean and resets the cleaning counter to 0 hours. It should only require cleaning every 50 or so working hours but after as little as just 1 hours use it requests cleaning. We've purchased a new cleaning tape along with new LTO backup tapes but that has not resolved the problem.
I have taken the library apart and can see no noticeable signs of dust inside. I have removed the tape drive from the... -

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....-
