    Ecs Mb694a

    Hi again all,

I have an ECS board (as mentioned in the title) which, as I just discovered, has a stack of G-Luxon caps in it. They don't appear to be faulty - yet.

This is probably a stupid question, but due to the age of this m/b (manuf. 2001), should I be ordering replacements right away?

If the board is worth repairing then replacement caps are recommended.

I usually wait until my caps bulge, leak or when my motherboard has stability issues. That's when I will start ordering caps and replacing them. I try to squeeze every last bit of juice out of a cap before it has physical defects or any defect. I even have Ltec and GSC caps still in one of my main PCs and i'm waiting for them to go busted before I recap them.

      Thanks.

This is risky, isn't it? If our os corrupts due to bad caps, you faces a complete reinstallation (or, worse, even loss of data).
Low quality caps don't last for long, you may gain a month fighting freezes and crashes: is this worth?

Good point... I'm incredibly tempted to get new caps now.

Should i only worry about values > 1000, or include them too?

Personally, i regularly run chkdsk. So there is no slow corruption of the system until the point of no return.
You will see it very early if something goes downhill in the error log. I never take it easily, if i find something bad on the disk. It is always a sing of instability, either caused by software or in most cases due to bad hardware.
Secondly, if you have vital data, you have to make a backup any way.
So i think using up the bad suckers until they starting to fail, should not be the problem.
But then, you should not delay your actions, or something else could be sucked into the downhill spiral too, leading to a damaged system.
