Replacement caps for Bestec 250 Watt PSU.

    Hello,

I have a failed shorter power supply here. It's a Bestec Model: TFX0250D5W, Rev: X4. I cracked her opened and found at least 4 dead caps on it. I wanted to replace most of them (I figured I'd leave the two big 200V ones). I'm trying to find suitable replacements and I'm not too sure how to go about doing it. Here's a list of the caps I want to replace:
    Capxon KF C852 Series 2200μF 10V x 3 (Either:
    Ripple ~ 1750, Impedence 0.041, Size 13x20
    Ripple ~ 1650, Impedence 0.052, Size 10x25)

    Capxon KF C852 Series 2200μF 16V x 3 (Either:
    Ripple ~ 2000, Impedence 0.038, Size 13x25
    Ripple ~ 1880, Impedence 0.04, Size 13x20)

    Capxon KM C832 Series 1000μF 10V x 1 Ripple ~ 520, Size 10x12.5
    Capxon KM C836 Series 1000μF 16V x 1 Ripple ~ 600, Size 10x16
    Capxon KM C838 Series 1000μF 16V x 1 Ripple ~ 600, size 10x16

I was thinking for the three 2200μF 16V caps, I could use the Rubycon ZLG series caps? https://www.badcaps.net/store/produc...roducts_id=167

I was looking on badcaps for the other voltages and capacitance and couldn't find any that matched that were made by RubyCon. Can someone please help me decide if the ZLG will work and help me pick a suitable replacement for the other caps? Thanks!

I've attached a copy of the datasheet for the KF and KM series caps.

When you specify "either", can you please be specific as to which capacitor you have? It's important in determining what you can use as a replacement.

Also, why do you only want to specifically replace those caps and not the rest of them, like say the 5VSB critical cap?

My advice to you is to post a list of all the caps in the PSU (Except the two big ones) in this format:

1)Voltage, Capacitance, Diameter (width X height), Brand, Series

Also, what kind of glue did Bestec use in this model? If it's the hard organic glue, you should think about removing it, as it carbonizes over time and becomes conductive, and could potentially short the PSU out and cause a catastrophic failure.

Topcat needs to start adding some PSU caps to his database. He would make more money that way. You might have to use other sources.

They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

I'm having trouble determining which one they are. When I measure them, they don't seem to match either of them. For example, one of the 2200μF, 10V caps is 20mm long, 10mm wide. The datasheet for the KF series shows the 2200μF, 10V should be either 13x20 or 10x25, not 10x20. I'm measuring just the body of the cap, not the leads as well. Where am I going wrong here?

It was a customers PSU from his PC. I asked if he was okay with getting a used replacement, he said yes. I sold him a replacement PSU out of one of my HPs I had sitting on a shelf collecting dust. Now that I have some time, I'd like to get it running again, pop it in the HP, and try to sell the HP for some quick cash.

I can purchase this PSU for 22$ on-line, free shipping. I believe these four caps died from overheating. The fan is completely seized. On the board, all 9 caps I listed are fairly big. All the other caps on this board are fairly small and seem to be fine. I didn't want to spend more money than I had to just to get this working again.

I don't know what type of glue they used. It's rubberish but really dry. It comes off fairly easy like. It is not conductive. I have been removing it though.

Don't worry about that. There are usually two reasons why a certain cap doesn't show up in its datasheet. The first is that the cap is a custom order, the second is that there is a newer version of the datasheet. In this case, we take the diameter and look at the ESR and ripple for said diameter within the datasheet.

You may as well do -all- the caps if you want to do a thorough job. How is your quitting smoking going BTW? Also, who do you prefer, Digikey, Mouser, or Newark?

Re: Replacement caps for Bestec 250 Watt PSU.

Is there a reason as to why I'd want to do the other smaller ones? All but three of the smaller ones are on a daughter board. I can pull them and check their ESR value. I just didn't want to invest more money than what it'd cost to buy a new power supply. If it's cheaper to just purchase a replacement, I'll do that. It doesn't make sense to pay more money when I'm just going to be selling it.

The quitting smoking thing is going terrible! I gave up trying to use the vaporizer. I was smoking it like a fiend. Day three now, completely cold turkey. I don't know how long I had used the vaporizer for, I didn't smoke any real tobacco when I was on it. Three days ago though, I had one cigarette. The day I threw the vaporizer away. I burned everything. I was cleaning and I found a bag of tobacco, I rolled a smoke and smoked it. Then I felt terrible for smoking it and burned everything. The vaporizers, my rolling equipment, the bag of tobacco, I just burned it all. I struggled real bad the first couple days. Today, I still feel like killing someone, but not like yesterday or the day before. Now it's like, I only want to kill them if they talk to me. If they leave me alone, I seem to be fine. So that's good.

Ah, ok, thanks for the progress update. That old tobacco must have been all dry, how did you manage?

Yea, you should re-cap the entire thing, because the weak point isn't necessarily the big caps. The PSU can still work if a large secondary cap is out of spec. It'll be passing on more ripple to the motherboard VRM than is desirable, but if a small critical cap is out of spec, the PSU may not work at all.

It wasn't too bad. It was pipe tobacco and I found it in the freezer. It just sucks, technically, it's day three now since I've had no nicotine and I really feel like I'm going insane. Easier every day though, that gives me hope that I'm going to make it this time. I really have to avoid anyone who smokes right now. That's really important. If I saw someone smoking, I think I'd ask them for a cigarette right now.

I will double check the smaller caps with my ESR meter and see what they say. I guess if I can't get the caps through badcaps.net, I think I'd prefer DigiKey, because I already have an account through them. If there's a cheaper company out there, I'd be okay with switching.
