LM358N or other IC for balanced input?

Just a curious question as I've not exactly worked much with balanced inputs at all. Currently my amp is connected with unbalanced inputs (TRS jack) and as such grounded through the input sleeve. Disconnecting the ground for it results in a fair bit of signal loss but power will not run through there and rather the power ground instead. I have cleaned up the rail noise with a ripple filter but would like to isolate the input ground and power grounds from each other next. Using resistors on either ground do not do any good in this regard.

I'm wondering if an LM358 or other such 8pin package IC can be used for converting an unbalanced input (unbalanced ground to both IN- pins) to a balanced one to isolate the input ground from the power ground in a single rail amp. Has anyone experience with doing the such or would a specifically designed differential amp be a necessity for the purpose instead?

So let me get this correcly, the AMPLIFER you have has only Un-balanced input (Tip (hot) and Sleeve (gnd)) but you want the Amp to have Balanced input for the differential signal input?
Or explain what you have and what you are trying to do.

Re: LM358N or other IC for balanced input?

What I'm trying to do is isolate the input ground from the unbalanced input of an amp. I had a topic on the issue before on a slightly related issue (power rail noise) and is an amp I'd built based on the TEA2025B Opamp. The input ground and power ground share the same rail and the power ground needs to be otherwise disconnected to avoid a ground loop. Both the input device and amp share the same power source so the power source grounds through the input ground of my amp.

I'm wondering if an lm358 or another type of IC would do the trick.

edit: I also realized I made the new topic in the completely wrong forum. Would explain why it didn't show up in the audio equipment discussion forum as intended. My apologies.

Re: LM358N or other IC for balanced input?

OK, so you have unbalanced input, even if you have balanced input but the external Source is un-balanced which means the source GND is still connected to the chassis and connected to the safety GND and your receiving amp also has audio circuit GND tied to safety GND, then you will still get the GND loop. You need to lift the circuit GDN from chassis GND, if you look at pro audio with 3-prong power plug, you will see GND lift switch (not the safety GND lift) that will disconnect the audio circuit GND from the chassis GND. if they do not have switch then you will see that they use washer on the input/output jack to float the circuit from the chassis.
If you draw up the wiring between two or more piece of equipment that has 3-prong plug and the AUDIO circuit GND is attached to the chassis, then you can see how the GND LOOP current flows between the equipment. What ever you do, do not lift the SAFETY GND.
Balanced source to balanced input, then you do not have to worry about loop because the signal is no longer reference to GND, differential signal is the key.

A 1:1 line input transformer is simple and foolproof. They aren't cheap if you want very high quality, but you can get several hundred volts ground isolation easily, something that an electronically balanced input stage will not do so easily.

The Jensen Isomax series is designed for consumer and pro gear to solve this problem. You don't have to think - just plug it in series with the input. Here's a link to get started: http://www.jensen-transformers.com/h...ter/isolators/

820-02020 Super Weird Issue: Keyboard Input Character Map "Wrong"?
            by ugamazing
So, I have a really bizarre issue that I'm struggling to identify the cause of. Working on an 820-02020 board with some bizarre keyboard/input-source character mapping. My suspicion is a possible damaged SPI ROM (U1970), perhaps, but I'm really not sure in this case:

            1. The issue is pretty weird, but when installing MacOS, I noticed my WiFi password did not work. I quickly realized the special characters (!@#$%^& etc) were not mapping correctly.

            2. I noticed the keyboard layout/input-source is defaulting to JAPANESE every single time I restore the board. I am not...

Neptune mixer model 611 - Works for a few minutes then fades out and distorts

            Hi there !

This is my first post out there, glad to be part of the community.

I was gifted an old analog mixing unit (from the 70s) by a good friend. It's a Neptune Audio Mixer model 611, 6 channel mixer with :

-6 XLR inputs wired hot to 3, and 1&2 to ground (which is already a weird start. You can see this in Picture 3, and all sockets are what I understand to be common ground, as there's a long wire connecting all XLR grounds together. Besides, all Hot are connected to the other pins via a cap with the marking 24 102k)
            -6 unbalanced...

            LM358 LM358S-13 Datasheet
            by Document Archive
The LM358 LM358S-13 consists of two independent, high gain, internally frequency compensated operational amplifiers which were designed specifically to operate from a single power supply over a wide range of voltages. Operation from split power supplies is also possible and the low power supply current drain is independent of the magnitude of the power supply voltage.

Application areas include transducer amplifiers, dc gain blocks and all the conventional op amp circuits which now can be more easily implemented in single power supply systems. For example, the LM358 series can be directly...

Acer TravelMate P214 - N19Q7 main power rail shorted to ground
            by mkdj
            Dear all,

I have taken out the motherboard of a Acer TravelMate P214. There is a short to ground on the main power rail (19V). I don't have the schematics or boardview for this board (DAZ8IMB1AA0 REVA). But I have found 4 MOSFETS close to the main power rail : 2 N-Channel and 2 P-Channel.

I have checked resistance across each of the 4 MOSFETS. I have the following readings:
            Both N-Channel Mosfets: nothing odd

            P-Channel MOSFET number 1:
            source - drain : 117 kOhm
            source - gate: 96 Ohm
            gate - drain: 117 kOhm

            Hi, Would appreciate some help.
I have an Apple Late 2013 15" A1398 MacBook Pro with Logic Board 820-3662.
Get charger light but no fan spin or chime. No liquid damage.
Found PPBUS and VCORE both shorted to ground. Other rails were ok.
Removed VCORE MOSFETS U7310, U7320 and U7330. Found U7330 was in fact shorted.
With the 3 MOSFETS removed, get PPBUS and fan spin. VCORE is still hard shorted to ground (0 ohms).
Attempted voltage insertion on VCORE to locate short using bench supply set at 1.0 VDC and 4.95 Amps (max current for my...
