    Replacing ceramical with electrol. capacitor

Little bit of help from my friends !
Old fujitsu -siemens LapTop c-series 1020, blown ceramical capacitor. According to a block diagram ( c31 4.7 uF 25v )

Question : can I replace ceramical ( non polarised ) capacitor with electrolit. or tantalum polarised capacitor with similar values ( for example 6.8uF 50v).

    Thanks in advance.

why would you do that. ceramic capacitors don't bulge and die and usually last forever

Yes it can be done...Take two Electrolytics and join the +ve leads together so that the two -ve leads are free for soldering........You can also try a non-polarized cap...the kind used as filter caps in tweeters. The better thing though is to get an original ceramic cap to replace your bad cap.

Thanks, for replay CapSwapper. The answer is : I have no time (patience ) to wait for delivery.

Thanks Andrew, that is the answer I've expected.

No need to do that if the ceramic capacitor was originally sitting on a DC rail. In that case, you can just use any polarized capacitor just fine.

And almost all circuits in laptops are polarized, so if you respect the polarity it will be just fine. Measure with your multimeter to any screw hole, the side that reads 0 will be the ground/negative.

I would recommend you to use a tantalum cap instead of an electrolytic for ESR and ripple handling reasons.

Re: Replacing ceramical with electrol. capacitor

Thanks for replies, I'm not a pro, I have basic knowledge of electronics. My dilemma was polarity. On schem. I cannot see polarity, so safest way is to solder non-polarised capacitor ( original or made one ).

Use your multimeter to check it.

                    ^Yes.
Set your multimeter to the lowerst resistance setting (200 Ohms on a manual meter... if you have auto, then no need to do this). Now touch both of your multimeter leads together and see what resistance the multimeter shows - this is the lowest resistance it can measure and can be assumed as a short for all practical purposes. On most decent multimeters, it should be less than 1 Ohm (0.7 Ohm to 1.5 Ohm is typical for cheap manual multimeters).

Now see which side of the cap lead measure that same low resistance - that would be the one that is connected to ground.

If I replace with inferior capacitor, Is it No harm to other IC components at all?
                          by chth96
I replaced some capacitor which is located on optical pickup pcb which is shown in the table below(PCB #2).Because it have been out of order.
Now,It works very well,But I just have found that all caps (6svpc100my and other part number as well) ,which is shown in the table below, has ultra-high ripple current spec.
It is not able to obtain any capacitor which can be a substitute for this ultra-high ripple current nichicon capacitor.
So I replaced it with samxon and rubycon's general capacitor(GP,YXA series).
I know that these capacitor will not last as long as nichicon capacitor...

How can I test non-polarized capacitor?
                          by chth96
I desoldered samwha NF capacitor(50v 5.6uf) from PCB circuit of 29inch CRT TV which have symptoms of no display after I heard sound of inrush of current to TV whenever I switch on this television.
I measured ESR value of this non-polarized capacitor(samwha NF capacitor 50v 5.6uf) by means of MESR-100 ESR meter and It displayed 0.3 ohm

And When I measured its capacitance with digital multimeter and LCR-T4 Mega328 meter, It displayed 10uf from DMM and 8uf from LCR-T4 meter.
I found catalogue of samwha capacitor(samwha-catalogue_3.pdf file), which is attached to this thread,...

Is it no harm to replace with capacitor without ripple current rating?
                          by chth96
When I tried to repair LG 29 inch CRT TV, I found that the ESR value of samyoung SMS capacitor(160v 2.2uf), which is very close to D1879 transistor, is 6 ohm.

Judging from above ESR Meter Table,I think It is necessary to replace this sms capacitor. So I visited local electronics shop, and I purchased 160v 2.2uf rubycon YK capacitor.
But when I browse through rubycon YK datasheet,I found that there is no ripple current rating for 160v 2.2uf specification. But On the contrary, I found 39 mA ripple current rating for 160v 2.2uf SMS capacitor.
                          Rubycon YK DataSheet (b...

Replacing capacitor in Original Xbox Foxlink Power Supply
                          by cybernet3000
                          Hello all,

Got a bit of a noob question - I have an original XBox revision 1.0 with a Foxlink FTPS-0001 Rev B psu. I've already removed the infamous clock capacitor and I'm planning on replacing the caps around the big heat sink (Thanks to everyone who contributed to that massive thread for pointing me in the right direction) but I also noticed on the PSU there's one large cap that seems to be bulging a little. It is cap C19 and from my googling I've been able to determine it's a 2200 uF 10 V capacitor.

                          My questions are:
                          1) Can I just replace this with any...

                          Should I replace polymer capacitor?
                          by chth96
a few days ago I finally purchased mser-100 v2 and I tested its abillity of measuring ESR value.
I found that It shows pretty accurate ESR value for electrolytic capacitor,But When I measure polymer capacitor of dreamcast game console,I found that one third of polymer capacitor's ESR value is more than twice the value of ESR meter table.(for example, I measured one polymer capacitor of 6.3v 100uf, It showed ESR value of 7.68)
Although my dreamcast now turns 20 years old but it still works. I occasionally have played game with it.
Is this ESR value of polymer capacitor correct?...
