    A few recapping questions from a newbie

    I'm quite new to the forums and after using the search function for answers, but it only returned vague matches, I decided to ask for help.

    1. I have an Epox 8RDA3 (I guess similar to other 8RDA+ variants) and some of the caps near the AGP & RAM slots are bulging (GSC caps.) One of the caps near the VRM, a Sanyo, seems that the rubber plug is a tad off (I can wiggle the cap a bit.) One cap near the SB is also bulging. Do I have to replace the bad ones, or do I have to replace all caps? Oddly the board didn't had any major crash or hiccup that I can recall, and I'm still using it right now (considering it's almost a 4-year old board.)

    2. People around here seem to favor Rubycon or United Chemi, and for a good reason. The only caps that I can order (in good quantity) from RS Components Philippines are Panasonic FMs. Could I use those for my board instead?

    3. Lastly, about caps in PSUs. Do I also replace those with low-ESR ones or any general-purpose caps of the same rating?

      FM's will work just fine... Many people here have used them.
      Ya'll think us folk from the country's real funny-like, dontcha?

          The Panasonic caps are fine, but usually they are larger diameter and make replacement difficult in some cases. Try to get Rubycon if you can. If size is a problem and you cannot obtain Rubycon or Nichicon etc try Big Pope on this forum for Samxon caps, they have been working well for while now.

          Yes replace the power supply caps with low ESR caps. It is very possible that the original caps have contributed to the stress of the motherboard caps.

              Yes, you could just replace the effected capacitors however there's no way of knowing whether what's left are still any good (using a visual inspection), keep in mind they're nasty GSC's, generally it's considered 'best practice' to replace all the same brand of effected capacitors (save more work/down time later)

              There's always Wai Fong out of Hong Kong, they stock Rubycon & Sanyo Low ESR variants... you'll require a PayPal account however

              I'd recommend the Low ESR replacements, additionally the SamXon capacitors refered to by davmax, have a good selection of casing dimentions, making it far easier to locate appropriately rated components that will fit into cramped PSU spaces

                  that panasonic fm is also perfect for psu recapping.
                  days are so short when you actually do something..

                      Thanks to all. I've already placed a pretty substantial order of Pana FM caps from RS Components, which is close to US$ 160 (ouch.) If my recap would turn out fine, I might recap a few faulty boards that I have around, and also my PSU (a 350W HEC.)

                      I'll post a few pix when it's done. Now I'll just sit tight and wait for my order to arrive.

                          Good luck recapping kamote. I have recently recapped numerous Epox mobos using Samxon capacitors available at Alexans. So far so good....

                              I just finished recapping the VRM of the board with Pana FM caps, and I must say the SB and CPU run much cooler than before. I had also replaced the caps near the memory slots with Rubycon YXG caps I "harvested" from a dead ASUS board. The 1000uf Pana caps I've ordered from RS components were in back order until January of next year!

                                  What series of your Samxon caps you recapped? GD? GC or GA?

                                      Hello!

                                      I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

                                      The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

                                      I'd like to recap some of my old mainboards (they are from 1998) before switching them on again for the first time after many years in storage. All caps still look good from the outside.
                                      There are three mainboards:
                                      - ASUS P5A rev 1.04
                                      - ASUS P2B-S rev 1.03 "Rubycon"
                                      - ASUS P2B-S rev 1.03 "Chemi-Con"

                                      If you are interested in their specs, The Retro Web has pages for the P5A and the P2B-S.

                                      They all have many 1000uF 6.3V 105°C capacitors. But there are some differences I cannot figure out.

                                      First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

                                      I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

                                      I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."
