  • Re: What PC games do you people currently play?

currently playing: Company of Heroes series.

Boy, what a very polished RTS, same vein as the Dawn of War series by THQ. Don't like the micromanagement skills required for the Brits or Panzer Elite, but still one of the best games out there.

occasional play: UT 2004 (skipped UT3, hehe), Guild Wars, HL2 or CS source

wanted to play: L4D, COD4 and its upcoming sequel, SC2

classics that I really like to play again: XCOM 1 & 2 (this time, no hex edit )

  • Re: Poly Mod Success Stories

I practically share the same sentiment with ss627, when it's worth the money to replace the caps with polymers. I have a socket 939 Athlon64 X2 PC & I want to extend its life for some more years (which is still BTW a very capable machine). Surprised that the Foxconn board has zero busted caps even though it's riddled with OST & Teapo and the PC sees heavy use. And after some window shopping on the net I found out that polymers are priced exorbitantly compared to lytics. A full poly treatment would go a little over $80 by my estimate, a bit too...

  • Re: Recapping Your Soundcard!

I recently finished recapping 2 cards, my Live! and an SB AudioPCI in my parts bin, and it was a total recap. Live! cards aren't really mod friendly, got problems removing the solder in holes and the PCB can be easily scratched. Took me more than 2 hours to recap . In contrast, the AudioPCI took me a little over 30 minutes to remove & recap.

Initially I used stock values but the sound was a bit muted. I used 100uf GP (general purpose) Elnas on the output, same value before the recap. Eventually I replaced those with 470uf 6.3v Panny...

  • Re: Recapping Your Soundcard!

I got an old SB Live! Value (CT4670) for peanuts, and decided to mod this one just for kicks. The EMU10K is still a great chip, and I do play games once in a while. I'm thinking of replacing the lone headphone driver, a Philips TDA1308 (used as an opamp, I guess? ), with a better one, and replace all those ugly & misshapen Wincaps around the AC97 chip. Better yet, replace all those . Any suggestions? I'm thinking of upping the output caps a bit, from 100u to 220u

  • Re: unused yet old caps...

Yeah, I read it in most datasheets before that caps stored for long periods must be "reformed" before being applied in circuits (in Panasonic datasheets it's called "capacitor reconditioning.") Basically charging it with a 1k current-limiting resistor attached in series with voltages close to spec at 30 minutes minimum.

I hope these unused caps will hold, notwithstanding these were stuck in shelves for a long time. 50 pieces of low-ESR Pana HFQ caps for less than a dollar is too good to pass up

    Thanks...

  • unused yet old caps...

it's been a long time since my last post

anyway, i purchased a lot of old stocks of unused caps from a flea market, a mix of nichicon PLs and panasonic HFQs of different values, with date codes around 1999 or 2000. i'm planning to use these on several old boards that needed recapping. do you guys recommend using these, even after reconditioning these little gems?

  • Re: A few recapping questions from a newbie

I just finished recapping the VRM of the board with Pana FM caps, and I must say the SB and CPU run much cooler than before. I had also replaced the caps near the memory slots with Rubycon YXG caps I "harvested" from a dead ASUS board. The 1000uf Pana caps I've ordered from RS components were in back order until January of next year!

    Here are some pics:

the first sanyo cap have electrolyte stains on the top, but no signs of buldging.

    caps removed and holes cleared....

  • Re: A few recapping questions from a newbie

Thanks to all. I've already placed a pretty substantial order of Pana FM caps from RS Components, which is close to US$ 160 (ouch.) If my recap would turn out fine, I might recap a few faulty boards that I have around, and also my PSU (a 350W HEC.)

I'll post a few pix when it's done. Now I'll just sit tight and wait for my order to arrive.

  • A few recapping questions from a newbie

I'm quite new to the forums and after using the search function for answers, but it only returned vague matches, I decided to ask for help.

    1. I have an Epox 8RDA3 (I guess similar to other 8RDA+ variants) and some of the caps near the AGP & RAM slots are bulging (GSC caps.) One of the caps near the VRM, a Sanyo, seems that the rubber plug is a tad off (I can wiggle the cap a bit.) One cap near the SB is also bulging. Do I have to replace the bad ones, or do I have to replace all caps? Oddly the board didn't had any major crash or hiccup that I can recall, and I'm still using...
