Bad thingamajig

Okay so lets just start off by saying
1.) I'm a girl
2.) I'm blonde
3.) I'm NOT a computer/TV wiz so please don't use jargon I can't understand.
4.) I'm a pilot so I'm not stupid - I can learn....just SPEAK SLOWLY lmao

Okay, so I inherited an old plasma tv from my grandfather. The moment I got it home, plugged it in, a poof of black smoke came from the back, and the picture went black. O.o

So I have this AWESOME friend who did mega research and found what the issue was, and came over and we knocked it out. Worked great. Bad Caps that were responsible for the picture - wedged in between a heat sink and....the name ecapes me but the little power things. lol...

So about a year goes by, and it happens again.. I figure. Hmm not so hard to do, so I went and bout four more caps, a soldering gun, and replaced the two caps that had blown before - even though they hadn't violently exploded this time.

SO now it's about 2 years later, and my son was watching a show, paused the TV, came back and the picture is now...dark. You can still see stuff moving around, but it's REALLLY dark.

My friend has gone AWOL and I can't find him. =(

So I figure caps are bad again. Wrong. I replaced those two and it didn't change things - actually now I've lost all sound now!

So I read up on this and see that the ZSUS board is responsible for the bad/dark picture - but the sound is on a different board?

What the hell happened and is this 10 year old tv worth saving?

I took pictures of the boards, and whatnot but didn't posted them, as I haven't' got them of my phone yet.....but I have #'s off them. I inspected all areas, and nothing looks bad EXCEPT....right by the caps that go bad, there is a.....flaw? in the green plastic part of the board. It's slightly bubbled up but not burnt. (I tried taking a picture of it, but it's so slight you can't see it.) the back of the board looks fine. The rest of the tv looks fine.

There is a green LED light on the back that blinks when I push ON.

When I unplug the right (Zsus board) I get a blue screen (still faint though) if I unplug the right board, picture froze and I couldn't get it to come back. Still no sound, but admittedly it "COULD" be muted, or something...I can hear static....Or like a clicking through the speakers when I turned the DVD player on and off. Both boards buzz when it's plugged in, but the one on the right (If you're standing behind the tv) doesn't get hot.

There is not a fan inside this puppy which I thought was odd. I cannibalized an old computer of useful parts and kept a CPU fan. If I get this thing fixed, I noted some power sources, on the left side of the Main (center) board - could I install the fan there, and help keep the TV cooler? Chrissakes I could bake a cake from the heat that thing throws off on a warm day.

I guess the inverter failed, causing the dark picture. Inverters do eventually wear out from normal use, and have to be replaced from time-to-time. (Unless this is a LED-backlit TV, which has no inverter.) And bad capacitors in the PSU can easily accelerate the wearout of the inverter.

As for sound, I'd guess the replacement capacitors you used didn't match the ESR specifications of the old caps - that is, they are probably general purpose capacitors, while the old ones where low-ESR caps. (Capacitors rated for 85°C operation are almost always general purpose, while 105°C ones are usually, but not always, low-ESR.)

Unusual for the question to be better than the answer.

1 Plasma Tvs do not have inverters.

2 If you read the post the capacitor referred to is a NTE -F 630vdc which is a polyester film cap and as such I do not believe your comment regarding esr is relevant?


@igmu89 - I dont know much about plasma tvs but help will be along soon - 10 years old? maybe hard to get parts and component level repair
is not easy on those boards- There are probably other boards in there (buffer Boards?) have you tried googling the board numbers to see if replacements are available and the price?

I did find the Zsus board on Ebay for around $50.00 (incl shipping) Pretty chea!. Others I've found around 150.00 plus shipping. I'm just making sure I KNOW that's the issue.

Also I'm pretty savvy, but there IS a ribbon that is attached to this board without it "actually" being plugged in...looks permanently attached - How do I remove this one from the board so I can replace it?

We cant do much without the pictures -I have no idea what ribbon /board you mean. You may have also missed some opportunity for help with the thread title. Whilst you may think its eye-catching the regulars would prefer it to have the name/model of the TV and the problem eg Samsung HPN5039X/XAA dark pic no sound.
There is a lot of good info in the thread if the title has not put people off reading it. Some may be waiting for the pictures so this is how to post them

We can help a lot more if you please post good clear pictures of the whole chassis, and then pictures of each board, front and back and close up of connectors, (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) using the manage attachments button, which is found by clicking "go advanced" under quick reply.

First off, I want to commend you on the research deal. My wife wouldn't know what to do if the TV quit working and I wasn't around. She would chunk the thing to curb. Second, I don't think the caps are the issue here. They may have been the original issue but this is more complicated than that. We really could use the pictures so I can see what I am looking at. I fix plasmas often but not enough to remember what they look like. The boards are very different than LCDs most are used to.

Other capacitors could have failed too.

The power things you refer to, they are probably transistors, right? (They are mounted on the heatsink)

The transistors might have failed with out any explosion and fire. Do you have a DMM? (DMM = Digital Multi-Meter).

Just for reference, the TV model number tells me it is a Samsung, yes, no?

Transistors....possibly!

I'll post the pics I DO have for now.... (here in a few) I actually need to get it downstairs where I can get in a permanent spot to have it taken apart....and away from the little paws and feet I have running around here. It's too damn big to be in the middle of the living room, so I have a few of them taken.

and yes, it's a Samsung...

I'll make some Notations on the picture of what ribbon I'm talking about and the caps that failed in the past.
