Strange odour when using the computer...

    Hi folks,

Just recently (as of last Saturday) I've started to smell an unusual odour when sitting at my PC. It's a really acrid, dry, kind of stale burning smell, that makes a king of burning sensation in my nostrils when I get a good whiff of it. I've also been experiencing slight itching and watering of the eyes and a mild headache after sitting at it for a while.

I haven't been able to track it down to even a general source, except to say I definitely seem to be getting it while the computer is in use. I've tried to sniff it out, going around the monitor, and inside the side of the PC case and sticking my head in the exhaust air coming out the back, but I haven't detected it any stronger when I do that. Can't see anything amiss (eg. leaking electrolyte) in the PC. I have a hunch it might be the monitor (4-year-old Hitachi CM721F 21" CRT), as it seems to come when the monitor is on and warmed up, and abates when it is off or goes into power-saving mode... but the smell comes and goes anyway, so there may be no correlation. I took the cabinet off the monitor (had to adjust the focus anyway) and had a good hard look at the circuit board but couldn't see anything obvious on that either.

Note this is unrelated to my recapped graphics card as that card isn't even running in this PC... but on that topic, while I had the card in an antistatic bag waiting to get the bulging and leaking caps replaced, sometimes I'd take it out and get a faint whiff of an odour that I think was similar to this (though nothing like as strong or persistent).

Besides the PC tower and monitor, I have a Creative Sound Blaster 5.1 speaker setup that's on all the time the PC is, and the whole lot is plugged into an Artec surge-protected powerboard... that couldn't cause any kind of frying smell could it?

And of course everything is running fine (well I have intermittent probs with the PC/Windows but I think they're drivers-related), so I don't know what else I might do except keep using the machine, and wait until either it goes away, something starts definitively acting up, or I get a strong enough whiff of it to isolate a source... hopefully before I poison myself.

Any suggestions are welcomed on what this might be or how to trace it with more precision (any way to test emissions or something?)...

Re: Strange odour when using the computer...

Well it's been a month so I just figured I'd post some closure. No idea what was going on, but the problem seems to have cleared itself up. I swapped my spare LCD monitor in place of the CRT for a week and was not able to distinctly smell the odour during that time, and since I've gone back to using the CRT the smell has not returned. Visual inspections of the CRT's and PSU's internals as well as generally inside the PC have revealed no obvious faults or any evidence of something burning, so that's all a bit of a mystery. Still, I won't complain too much about a problem resolving itself.

HannStar Hanns-G HC194d LCD monitor repair

Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

      AOC AG493UCX 49-inch monitor - Firmware request
      by wattage
      Hello Badcaps Community,

I purchased a preowned AOC monitor that is not working and out of warranty. It was sold as not working. I am looking for guidance on self-repair. In particular, I am after the firmware for the monitor. At the end, I have included monitor model information and links to pics and vids of the issue.

The problem is that it will not display a picture on any of its inputs. And the on-screen menu does not appear. The power button works properly. It powers on with the remote as well. But the on-screen menu does not appear, even when not connected to any...

      Hi Everyone

Lately I am experiencing the deja-vu incident on one of the led monitor like this.

The monitor will randomly blackout and display no signal and will recover again.
Sometimes need to power and off again to restore the display but...

LG 23MP55HQ LED Monitor turns off after a few seconds or flickers.
      by Rick_1234
      Good evening, gentlemen.

I have a problem with my monitor. It turns off after a few seconds or flickers. Shining a flashlight on the screen doesn't show any image, so I guess it's not the "2 seconds to dark" I read in the forum.

To turn it back on, I have to press the power button twice. Then after a few seconds it turns off again or flickers. See video.

Wise Wing F199 19'' LCD monitor - recapped
      by momaka
Looking through my repair pictures and notes, it's been a long time since I posted anything in the LCD monitors section. So here goes that.

I'm dedicating this thread to one of the very first LCD monitors I repaired (if not the first one), which was more than 10 years ago now. The monitor is a Wise Wing, model F199. It's a 19” CFL-backlit LCD. I got it for free off of Craigslist in 2009 from a guy, who said he bought it for cheap from Wallmart and the monitor worked only for a little less than 2 years before quitting.

When I saw the Craigslist post, I wasn't...
