I've had a lot of computer problems lately, and someone online suggested perhaps bad capacitors on the motherboard might be the culprit. I opened it up and all the capacitors on the motherboard look just fine, but several of the ones on the video card are either bulging or busted right open. The problems I had been experiencing were affecting the onboard LAN, mouse, and causing my CD drive to freeze up as well as Windows XP being unable to boot at all in the end. Could all of this have been caused by bad caps on the video card? Should I still be looking for a motherboard problem, or will replacing the video card be enough?

Re: Bad caps on video card
it would definately be a good idea to recap or replace the video card and see how that affects the situation. regarding the motherboard, some caps can be performing badly after some time but not showing visible signs. you can see this if you check the board using an oscilloscope while it is working.
another place to look is inside the psu. see how the caps in there are doing. (heh Rainbow beat me to it I take too long to post)
easy to blame problems on caps though. you may have other issues also. best to change graphics card and see how that goes. we can help you recap it properly if you like.
can you post some pics of the card please. up to 2000x2000px is permitted.
if you want also list the brands/series of the caps on the mobo which are 470uf and higher and we can advise if there might be a prob.Comment

Re: Bad caps on video card
Thanks. I don't have access to my computer right at the moment, but I'll have a look and come back with some more info. I don't think recapping is in the cards for me, since I have very little knowledge or experience with electronics.Comment

by SluggerBI have an old Tivo. The Power Supplies are known to have caps that fail. Here are the caps that come with the original power supply:
I could not find replacement caps with the exact same specs. I followed an online guide and recapped the power supply with caps with these specs
The power supply now works, however the HDMI video is giving me eye strain. I don't know how a capacitor on a Power supply could impact an HDMI video signal, but it does, the Tivo interface has a flicker now and the color/brightness is off. So I want to get some new caps...-

by gcrezzThe issue with this video card is the HDMI port. Specifically on pin 19 (Diode checks on all other pins are normal). When i do a diode check on it from the pin on the board itself, I have nothing. There is also no short on the pin. Resistance reads about 200k. Normally on any HDMI pin 19 I would expect some voltage drop anywhere from .5v to 1.2v but here, I have nothing. The card is operational and can be used via the displayPort ports, but not through the HDMI. Attached you will find the pdf schematics for the card on page 22. I have verified that all of the resistors on this line before the...07-25-2024, 09:49 AM

by momakaAaaaand… we have more retro-PC nostalgia repairs again.
This time it's with a XFX GeForce 6800 XT AGP video card. The XFX model number is PV-T42K-UDE3.
As with many early XFX cards, crap caps are the main issue here. The first one I bought and recapped was back in 2017. I've been meaning to post about it for a long time, but never got around to it due to the card needing a better heatsink/cooler to test it fully with the recap (more on that later on.) In the meantime, I acquired a 2nd one of these cards not too long ago (February.) Not like this makes any difference. Both... -

by momakaI know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.
For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:
