    backup program to restore applications?

Is there any backup software that will make backups of the entire disk including applications.

I have XP home on a laptop.
I want to do a new install of XP home (different product key, same XP) on another computer.
I want to have a backup of the laptop then restore it on the other computer.

Is there anything that can do that?

sounds impractical to me because the second computer most likely has a different chipset.
you'll spend more time tinkering around with drivers (and probably WPA/WGA stuff) than doing a fresh install would take.
possible - yes, practical - no.

It depends what your resources are. If you've got a computer running Linux, or able to run a linux live cd, try this:

      1. See here: http://madberry.org/2009/01/clone-a-drive-with-dd/
      a. The source drive needs to be smaller than the destination drive. If not, you can use gparted to shrink the source partition to a size smaller than the destination drive. Afterward, you can expand them back to the maximum size of the drives that they are on.
      2. Obtain (I'm not going to tell you where) the microsoft sysprep utility. This will reset activation and allow you to input a new product key.
      3. Screw around with drivers and so on.

I'd rather just do the fresh install...

        Try these
        http://clonezilla.org/

        Or more.

And yeah with windows this isn't practical for changing hardware.

Seagate has something called Disk Wizard which is a limited version of Acronis.
          Its free.
It will work if you have at least one Seagate or Maxtor drive.
          I'm going to use that.
I'll do a repair install of XP on the cloned disk.

Agree with kikkoman & acstech - Do the clean XP install. If it was an IDENTICAL system, then you could.

Do the new XP install. Use the XP Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to move your data. Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools

That will only migrate the files and settings, not the installed programs.

Never said it would. Said "...to move your data"

No sense repeating what others implied and the link to MS will explain what will and will not be copied.

I used seagates disk wizard. Its a version of Acronis.
Free if you attach any maxtor or seagate drive to it.
                    Works fine.
                    Repair install worked fine.
Now my desktop system thinks its a sony vaio laptop.
Just had to uninstall the sony stuff that only runs on sony.

i was using acronis today again. i do like it.
has some dangerous option though to clone the disk and erase source disk...

unfortunately i wanted to clone a win2k server boot disk from a 120gb to a 250gb. i forgot to apply the largelba registry patch before cloning. so i get inaccessible boot disk when i booted from the clone. then i ran out of time and had to abort....uuuuh what a shit technician i am
