Capacitor leg stuck in mother board

    Hello,

I have done much searching but have not found anything helpful. I have a computer mother board with three bad capacitors. I have removed all three capacitors, however two capacitors each left a leg behind in the board. What is the best way to get the hole cleaned out, if possible?

    Thanks,

    Umjohn

Is there enough of the leg left to grab onto? If so, grab it with tweezers and heat the hole it's in from the other side using fresh solder on your iron and keeping a little pull on the leg. It should come free. If not, you may need to use a needle to push the leg out. Someone to hold the board for you while you work is a plus.

      add solder both sides.
i would use some small pliers not tweezers.
try heating alternate sides and working it.

Sometimes that happens on the ground plane leg of a badly damaged capacitor. In that case the problem with both tweezers and pliers is that they act as heat sinks, which is the last thing you want when the ground plane is already sucking heat away from the solder. For this reason, I come down on the tweezer side of this debate, since the tweezers cool the wire less.

There are ceramic tweezers which, being insulators, would be great for this application, but they tend to be really expensive.

Whatever you do, apply no significant force to that leg. Once the solder is fully melted it will come out easily. If the solder is not fully melted yanking on it may damage the motherboard.

          I'd:
Get A DE-Soldering Iron (DE) People Never Look At DE
          Heat It Up
          Get Flux
Get Some Flux On The Iron
          Get Your Mobo
          Put It On The Area
Then CAREFULY Blow On The Mobo Surface
          Wait For It To Cool
AFTER Cooling Pull And Twist A Little Bit CAREFULY
          Pull It Out

Or, add solder, both sides, heat and insert the leg of a new cap in the bottom, forcing the broken one out the top.

                Because,

That MIGHT Push It Through But, It Might Also Solder As 2 And Make Too Big Of A Hole And Then When You Do Fix It, It Won't Make Contact Or Even Solder In.
That Bight Be Fixed By:A LED Light,Soldering Stuff,Cabel,Lots Of Led,A New Cab,Wire Strippers,A Few Hours Of Time.

using a desoldering tool would of probably been the best way to make sure the leg came out with ease, so you woulden't have to pull it out afterwards

I use the hakko 808, its good priced, and works good as long as you keep the the solder channel clean
