EDS ESR Meter Review

Has anyone used the EDS ESR Meter or have any thoughts on it? Would like a meter to test caps in circuit.

Also, what about their leak meter?

I've been using the CapAnalyser for many years and it suits me better than any other meter I've tried.
Some folk will say it's antiquated as it doesn't have a digital display but I have that on the 'Blue' meter and don't particularly like it.

Big pluses....
it's so easy to use and automatically discharges a charged cap
tweezer probes are excellent
has adjustable DCR

Fantastic bit of kit that I wouldn't be without but it is expensive - as I use it commercially that doesn't matter.


The leak tester is for short circuit finding in PCB traces - not often useful.

I am fairly new to electronic component repair I would be dead in the water with out my capanalyzer it solves 90 percent of all my monitor repairs. Just change your batteries every six months.

Well I believe that there is a catch with those old style meters.

I am currently reviewing one of the latest ESR meters the DER EE / DE-5000 and I did manage to make on PCB measurements.
But in the modern AC to DC pulsing power supply you can easily measure the capacitors at the DC output stage, but is impossible to measure the 400V cap due the low in resistance coils that is near to it.

Not all PSU are build equal, but it depends of why you are planing to get an such a meter, so to select the correct type that you need.

Analog televisions and VCR are designs of the past.
Now days the low ESR needs high resolution and this translates in to digital display with enough counts as 20,000 for capacitance plus 2,000 counts for measuring the resistance.

Most SMPS uses caps in parallel (very wide used method), so the reading will not be accurate when measure in circuits.
