That's a pretty old board. Could be bulged or bloated caps on the board or in the power supply.

Do a visual examination of the caps on the board and in the PSU.

Either test the Power Supply using a tester or swap it out with another power supply and see if that helps.

Photos of the motherboard and power supply internals would help.

You will have to take the board out of the case at the very least. Remote chance that something on the board or trapped between the board and the case is causing a short to ground.

Bad capacitors most likely. On the board. That Duron runs hot and it probably popped all nearby caps by now.

I'd look into getting an entirely new computer though or at the very least upgrade the CPU and memory, i'm not sure how you do with Windows XP in 128MB.

the durons were in the middle of the cap fiasco.
        99.9% chance its caps.
and yes xp with 128mb would be painful to use.forget sp3.

Bad caps for sure if it is a USB device. But Serial and Parallel devices are not active upon plugin like USB so I think your problem is PSU related.

ok guys i have added 256MB RAM to my system

These are the caps in the systems

            6.3v 4700uF (x4)
            6.3v 1000uF (x6)
            6.3v 330uF (x2)
            10v 100uF (x4)

What are the upper limit or lower limit of both voltage and capacitance i can replace with as am not getting the same diameter and capacitance of the capacitors. the ones i get need space not available in the system

What brand and series are there on the board? A nice clear picture of the board would help greatly.

And there's no reason you need to change the values on anything. Topcat stocks all the caps you need in the badcaps.net store and ships anywhere in the world.

Where are you located? We will help you pick the right caps.

i just observer that some times as in 1 in 100 chances, the system behaves well. and the rest of the time not. Are you still sure i need to recap?
