Re: Panasonic Toughbook slow, messed up, etc.

Norton has changed a lot. It is no longer the memory hog it had become in 2004-2007. I still wouldn't use it tho.

Common sense is the best antivirus. Well, the best anti-anything really...

av might stop you from dragging in an infected file on your flashdrive, ect.but the crap mutates fast nowadays.av is like a cop.comes in after the event to clean up.common sense will stop most infection attempts in their tracks.

As far as AV, I always use either Microsoft Security Essentials (light on RAM but not very good protection), Comodo Internet Seucirty, or AVG Anti-VIrus 2012 Free...

Norton is great but not free :-(

On the toughbook I put Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free on it so if I get suspicious I will just run a scan
And as far as web browsing speed, I use AdBlock, which helps a lot, and Flash won't work on Windows 2000 anuyway,

Flash even works on Win98. Btw, i don't like the new politics of Malwarebytes. I needed it last month, and they added a service so that it runs at all times... Well, that would be fine and dandy - if that service wouldn't hang Windows Explorer at startup! No taskbar, no icons. Awesome work dudes.

I let it do its job then quickly uninstalled it. I miss the old MBAM.

I don't see a startup service for MBAM. Maybe you're using the Pro version which includes real-time anti-virus protection?

Well it said something about a trial, so i guess i tried the Pro version.

Well then that is it. Malwsrebytes Pro has real-time protection. You got the trial so it has it! If you uninstall then reinstall and decline the trial it wont do that.

FWIW, I use norton on all my PCs. It may be payware, but it's effective and VERY light on memory, and never scans unless you leave the PC alone for like 15 mins.
You must be using some version of Norton that I've never seen...

Or an older copy of the corporate AV... that was pretty light on resources.

Norton is not VERY light....I wouldn't go that far to say that. But it is still a huge improvement...

All AV software is useless garbage. Norton, Comodo, AVG, Kaspersky, Avira, McAffee bitch please throw that resource hogging shit in the trash where it belongs. I DGAF how resource light anything is supposed to be, I've yet to see an AV that doesn't noticeable drag down a computer. I've gotten three or four viruses in all my years on computing without an AV. Each instance took maybe 20 minutes to clean out. Please read this informative article for more information on antivirus software: http://www.urbandictionary.com/defin...pid%20Bullshit

I'm using microsoft security essentials. So far it works out pretty darn good, especially for the price.

i use avast, and it is very, very good, especially for the price! it also is very lightweight...

as for the common sense arguement, i do not see antivirus as a replacement for commonsense nor do i see common sense as a replacement for antivirus. imho, they go hand in hand...

you could also say putting a roll bar on a convertible is a wate of weight and aero drag. same with seatbelts and air bags. after all, if you are a good driver and use common sense, you will NEVER be in a wreck! (sarcasm).

if you pick the right AV the cpu % used will be so trivial that it seems pointless to bareback the internet.

I know first hand that common sense alone isn't a safe bet... I have had to reformat drives over stuff gotten while going to "safe places"... gmail, facebook, badcaps, and youtube was all.

the bottom line is that if you bareback, be aware that you may get a nasty gift in return... bareback at your own risk!

Except that in a car you might, you know, die. If you get a virus it'll take 20 minutes to have your computer running top notch again.

I've never gotten more than annoying adware or those fake antivirus thingies. And both times it happened it was off a sketchy porn site. I've ran Windows 98% of my time in the computer world.

I had a few infections while I was running an AV too way back in the day.

if you are lucky... if you get a nasty one then you have a reformat in your near future.

You can either spend 5 minutes installation + 5 seconds additional plstartup time or 20 mins/month removing virueses. Especially since it is free, there is no reason to nit use anti virus software

The last 3 versions of norton have made absoloutely NO noticable difference whatsoever to any of my PCs, not even my old Socket A PC which was retired last year after the board died.
