No screen output - cap prob?

    Hi

I've got 2 ABIT VP6's that have failed. They failed a while back and we needed to upgrade anyway so I stuck 'em on a shelf and forgot all about them until I saw your website.

I'd like to see if I can bring them back into use as linux servers, but I'm not completely sure if the symptom I'm having indicates busted caps. The machines failed within 2 weeks of each other - the symptom is a completely blank screen on both.

I've stripped the board down of everything but the graphics card but I can't get any output to the screen at all (I've tried several different graphics cards and monitors). I've used different power supplies and there's a light on the board anyway, so the board is receiving power. I've also reset the CMOS, but to no avail.

    Is this a caps symptom?

Take a look at that and do a comparison... If your caps look like the ones pictured, it's safe to assume that is your trouble. The symptoms you described sure sound familiar!!

By the way, they make GREAT Linux machines!!

        Thanks both - much appreciated!

It's a cap problem - There's a slight discharge from a couple of the caps, and a few others are bulging. Given that both my VP6's went within a couple of weeks of each other (around the time of their first birthday - they were heavily used encoding machines), I reckon cheap power supplies must take some responsibility for failing to moderate the supply effectively. I've learnt my lesson - it's Antec all the way from here on in!

I'm not sure if I'm up to the soldering job myself. TC - I understand you do /did this commercially? - if I can't muster up the equipment / enthusiasm, can I call on you expertise?

        Thanks again.

Abit will probably RMA 'em for you, and replace 'em with repaired ones. Maybe for free, maybe for $25 each.

Macbook 2017 with touchbar (A1706) won't turn on after removing the screen
              by Ryan.man
Hello everybody! Posting this in hopes somebody has some expertise that leads to a clear path of troubleshooting that saves me a lot of time!

My macbook has the flex cable problem, the one that prevents the screen turning on. Ive been dealing with this for the last 3 years. Last year it went dead and I managed to fix it following youtube tutorials. But my fix wasnt the best, the problem returned a month later. This week, it went dead again. I again tried to fix it.

This time the original cable broke too close to the screen, it can't be fixed without tearing the screen...

iphone XS turns off when press on screen.
              by smic717394
              Hi,

I have a iphone XS that came in for a screen replacement, the screen was badly cracked, and inside missing scues, on the back of the screen still the blue protector, the screen was a LCD. So we replaced the screen and all good, installed the screen and we noticed that pressing the screen with a bit of force but not excessive, the phone dies. After plugging the charger it turns back on, but again if you press it it dies. I open the phone again, and I can't see anything major, with the phone open, if I press on the logic board, battery, charging board, or even putting pressure on...

MacBook Pro 14". The screen DP chip failed.
              by SSBDADC234

When replacing the screen of this MacBook model, the DP855A chip must be moved from the existing screen for the screen to operate properly.
However, when I removed the DP855A chip from the existing screen, I must have done something wrong and the chip broke.
Testing the chip pins with a multimeter revealed a short circuit inside the chip.
Is it impossible to repair this? I couldn't find a programmer for this chip, nor any eeprom programmer software....

Crelander DS16 Dual screen BIOS Update failed recovery with CH341A
              by michelhadid
Hey guys. Michel here. I´m trying to recover a Crelander DS16 Laptop (i7 10750h dual screen laptop, ZENBOOK DUO Clone).

Laptop lost power and failed a BIOS Flash mid flash with AFUWIN/DOS. I of course made a backup beforehand, however, i can´t flash with AFUWIN/DOS now since it doesn´t boot/post anymore (black screen, fans on). I´ve read the BIOS chip (W25Q80DVSIG) with a CH341A Programmer, but AFUWIN Bios backup is 12MBytes and the CH341 read is a 1Mbyte file. I have compared both files and tried changing some data around with a hex editor (used WinOls to compare and edit) but...

              Wier WA505 SMPSU output failed
              by nath1977
              Hi,
Im about to repair a failed Wier WA505 power supply which hasn't been used for many years. It was working for 30 mins or so, then started to smell bad so switched it off quick.
On closer inspection a 1500uF cap across the 5v output has swollen. Adjacent to this is an overheated (open circuit) resistor.
Ive removed the electrolytic cap and resistor - the cap replacement is straightforward and will replace the adjacent ones at the same time. The resistor looks like it sits across the output. Any ideas what value this is likely to be? Was thinking 100R 1/2watt would be suitable....
