Hi Guy's my name is Dale H. Stevenson I am a retired plumber and professional tinker if it moves warms up gets cold has gears or plastic parts in I can take it apart not always to be back together. But worlds of enjoyment for me. I also repair small engines weedeaters,a nd such. I found this fourm when I aquired an ACER 1916W with no lite behind the screen.
I have repaired a Dell 15" it's the one I use Mouser is 10 miles from my house in Mansfield, TX. I am in Grand Prairie, TX. 75051 I have a lot of health problems so don,t get to do as much as I would like also a Master Mason and 32nd scottish Rite.

Hey - I go by Sandman - been my nick since Air Force days.
I've been hooked on hacking-in extra features since my Amiga-1000 (wish I'd held onto that one, actually).
Years later...now I've got my first 2-seconds-to-black problem with an otherwise nice monitor...and was happy as a clam (however happy shellfish are?) to find somebody out here put together a forum!
Google is so much more efficient than the "gopher" routines we used to hand-code to search abstracts of articles on Darpa-net.

Awesome to find some discussion and resources for how to track down these misc. electronic problems - now I'm looking around my stash for other things to fix once I get my other monitor back up and back-lighting...

I'm still an Engineer, though now its designing HVAC, lighting, fire alarms, controls, and anything else that goes into energy-efficient buildings.

as this is a brand new forum, i thought i'd open up a thread to encourage new members to introduce themselves a bit.. Now hey.. Let's not get too personal.. Ok ?

And if you wouldn't mind to keep this thread \"clean\" let's try to keep the the chitchat (i.e. Even the welcome to the board replies) to a minimum or this thread may get to 100 pages fast

So i'll start things off :

My name is petabyte and i'm a forum junkie. :oops: i've been off the wagon for a number of years and countless times i've tried to stop but it's useless.. I need to feed my learning addiction.. :!:

Now just a bit about me.. I'm a fairly secretive guy in terms of privacy on the net.. Especially when the things you write are visable to anyone with a net connection. But i love to share the info and knowledge i have, so that's why i'm here, to share and learn.

My formal education is that of an electronic engineer and i held a field service position with a firm for over 20 years.. That job is gone now along with company car and laptop <cry> oh well..
So needless to say (but i will) i've always tinkered with things.. Yes, a hacker.. (too bad that term lost it's orignal meaning) a hardware hacker mostly.. Hacking fixes in whatever i find that breaks.. (except for cars, i have friends for that) i got started a little late into the computers, my first box was an ibm pc-xt with a whopping 10meg hd,blazing fast 4.66mhz 8086 processor, 640k mem running dos 3.3.. Man was i cool back then.. :roll: Nevermind..

So these days, i'm forced to be a software guy as well.. As i fix pc's for friends and that usually means cleaning virus/trojan/adware and reinstalling os's.. Yeah hardware breaks but not that often :cry: So as a result, i keep up on my software knowledge by visting a few security forums.. And trolling around a few hardware forums as well.

Now i found this place from a thread at motherboards.org/forums
where i've been hanging out lately.. It's a nice friendly place with some pretty smart people.. Mostly, of course, it's about mobo's.. So this person mentioned badcaps.net and i recalled reading articles a year or so ago about the faulty caps and was curious as to what you guys were up to.. And i said \"w00t.. They have a forum\"..

And so now.. You're stuck with me :p

so what's your story ? Come on.. Give it up..

this is my first time on a forum... So im trying to learn the basics... Im here cus i need help with repair's to a hi-fi, as its old. Thanks, mark.

My name is Brett Tweed Heads New South Wales Australia.I am 51 and have been in the heavy haulage and machinery plant since I left school.Mainly interstate truck driver till 2007 when I fell of the top of a machine. In the last two and a half years i have had 4 full knee replacements and all have failed and been told i will not be able to return back to truck driving so I did a computer course in 2009 which involved pulling totally apart installing OSystems and fixing customers machines. And at the moment iam having trouble with my monitor.

I've not had much experience in fixing PCBs and component level stuff. Just trying to learn. It's amazing at the knowledge on the web. Like the previous gentlemen,....my monitor went bad.

Just checking as a new member. I have a via m10000 with bad caps and will be working on it soon. We also had a boat load of del sx270 machines at work that got surplused, I hope to pick a couple of those up also.

I am glad to have a source of materials (BadCaps) and a source for help (forum).

Hi All,

The first twenty years of my life was a software engineer. Now an IT director for a non-profit. Have always been a DIYer when it comes to computers. Haven't done much with new LCD's. Plenty of teardowns, troubshooting, etc. with pc's and laptops though.

I was going through all kinds of forums and found this forum and it is about the best so far that I have come across. it has almost every thing that I am looking for.. From Professional to Layman Information. And it sounds like a lot go great people. I am a retired Surveyor and always been into electronics, and love working on computers and the such. I know that I will learn so much here and give any advice that I know. I just purchased a Aoyue 968 3-in-1 soldering and rework station. And was wondering if that is enough to rebuild the capacitors in motherboards, and what other accessories do I need to get going for my little workshop. Any advice would be knowledge for me. This is the first forum I've ever actually joined. I have gained an immeasurable amount of knowledge from such forums by stumbling on them whenever I did a search for my query.

I am a field engineer for a tech company in Palma de Mallorca, Spain and have been here, from the USA, for the past 5 years.

My duties are, and not limited to the installation of PLC equipment as a backbone for Networks where running of cable is not practical.
I am also the fix it man among other roles, that, since the recession it has become necessary as installs and resources have dwindled away.

I actually like tinkering and repairing things, in fact my first black eye was caused when I was six and dissected an old wind up Alarm Clock. Can you imagine my surprise when the mainspring decided to let loose!

I got involved with repairing PC's back in 2004 when I bought a Compact Presario and it came with a defective hard drive.
I spent 2 weeks on the phone with India every day until my ISP told me I had a bad HDD!

This is when I realized I need to learn to fix these things. I knew I could not just jump into the trade and start working on people’s sacred machines so I devised a plan. I would get donated PC's and fix them for underprivileged kids!

It wasn't hard to find several charitable organizations happy to unload their closet full of dead dogs on someone eager to recycle them. And back to their clients to boot!

It was amazing how much I learned in such a short time through the internet forums with so many people willing to share knowledge. Where was this when I was growing up?


Anyway, I found this forum after disposing of countless Mother Boards and PSU's. I made my first order of Capacitors around 2 months ago and successfully gave new life to 3 Mother Boards and 2 PSU's.

I am now in a situation where we have many devices we sold to a client with pcb boards with failing Electrolytic Capacitors. The manufacturer is claiming heat as the cause but I am suspecting low quality Cap's.

I finally have a reason and the confidence to join a forum. I hope you guy's will welcome me as I am looking forward to sharing with you.
