Hi, I’m Wheels! At least that’s what my offline friends call me. I’ve lead an interesting life that came to a professional halt when I got sick. My last job was working for Chase Bank’s IT department in Columbus Ohio (Polaris campus). My role was basically a glorified help desk but I loved it. I was a network associate and knew I was heading out so the desk job was perfect!
Since getting sick I have slowly gotten away from the industry side of things and have learned to enjoy tech as an end user with a bit of curiosity. I don’t stay up-to-date in the minutiae of networking and PCs but I do enjoy the bird’s eye view with the occasional swoop to check “under-the-hood”.
I have fiber internet and that allows me to host a variety of games and cloud services for myself and select friends. I also have a dedicated Ookla server and open ports for iPerf. I’m working (dragging my feet) on setting up an OpenSpeedTest server but life is in the way right now.
during the C-19 lockdowns I ordered a customized HP ZBook Firefly 15 G8. It’s got all of the security features like NFC, smart card, Tile, fingerprint sensor, etc. I even opted for the 5G modem and 4K screen as a little treat. This laptop has been my primary computer since it first arrived.
Last year just before the 3 year warranty expired it wouldn’t turn on. I went through HP’s service manual to troubleshoot it and they agreed to repair it. Instead of replacing the BIOS they just swapped the board. It’s now doing the same exact this and that brought me here. I’ve got myself a CH341A programmer with a 8-pin WSON probe coming soon. My hope is that I can revive this laptop without needing to solder or resolver anything.
I figure that since I’m getting the tools together to hopefully repair my computer that I can learn about BIOS modding and repair in general. So I’m here to learn and to hopefully get my laptop back. Being on disability means I absolutely cannot replace the laptop.Comment

Probably like everyone else here, have been tinkering since I was a kid, taking apart toys before playing with them and getting into trouble for it. I've been in IT for most my working life, with repairing things for family and friends just on the side and trying to keep good equipment out of landfill by repairing instead of throwing away. I've currently got a Yamaha keyboard that I'm trying to repair, and discovered badcaps where I'm hoping to get some help, and might even be able to help someone back. Looking forward to having a look around!Comment

Hi everyone, I’m Ray.
I just like to dabble and fix stuff if I can — laptops, electronics, whatever's broken. I enjoy learning as I go and tinkering with hardware when I have time. Not a pro, just curious and always trying to figure things out.
Glad to be here.
