Im just a guy that likes to tinker with stuff. I have some education in electromechanical engineering but I never finished. I like to tinker with stuff that I can break down and rebuild so I've dabbled in automotive repairs, custom pc water-cooling and cameras. I've essentially become the handyman for most of my friends from home mechanic, technician, plumber, and whatever else.

My current project, I'm working on getting this 16" macbook pro M1 Max working, I have one that does work and thought I would pick this one up for the larger size and storage if I can get it working while also making some money by selling my smaller m1 Macbook. Now my current predicament might land me in the negative in my bank balance if I need to splurge on a whole new display. I've narrowed down my problem to either 1 of 2 areas, the data stream ribbon cable, or a bad IC fuze. I don't know the schematics for the A2485 M1 Max boards and would appreciate any advice on diagnosing it further or disassembling the LCD, I can re-solder parts if need be. If the Display is already toast then I'll take my chances fixing it before wasting 1400CAD. The reasonable deduction comes with some of the techs I've asked and from the symptoms its a %60 bad cable and 40% bad IC. Screen isn't completely black, the miniLED are still on and I am able to adjust brightness which rules out TCON. mac still detects the monitor and external display works, when I picked up the monitor and had it hooked up to an external monitor then closed the screen and had it sit for a a few minutes and opened it while hooked up, I got the monitor to work until I disconnected the external display to which it stopped working. I diagnosed the codes on the laptop and it returned a ppp020 and NDC001 which points to power regulation issues and lid sensor, so I'm assuming there a fair chance it could be board related. In the case I want to just replace my display, I can't be certain whether it would fix my problem indefinitely or if a potential board issue would cause it to stop working again. Another note, when I took possession I noticed a dent near the bottom left of the apple logo on the display which may indicate that the ribbon cable may have been compromised there. Again, I can't do too much except speculate due to the variables.
