Very short introduction and verification post

I'm EpicLPer, been active on the internet for a very long time and love fixing up "believed to be completely dead" tech. Been collecting and reviving hardware from the dumpster for quite a while now and enjoy doing it each and every time I find something interesting

I've been in the IT industry in some capacity or another since 1985. A few years earlier, if you count the time I spent during my highschool years working for a pharmacist who was told he needed to modernize his paper-based practice. He was younger than I am now when I watched his face fall as he eyed the AS/400 that was delivered and set up in his back office. "I'm too old for this sh... Do you want a raise?"

From my UNIX-baptism, to my first IBM 8086-XT running DOS 3.x with an acoustic modem, to working for Evans & Sutherland around the time they boasted graphics for TRON and The Wrath of Kahn, to my first corporate layoff, I became entrenched in IT. Funny that, since I was a BIOLOGY MAJOR. I dropped out of college almost before I got started to continue work full time surfing the world of digital Bulletin Board Systems for Clark Development, doing tech support, sales, technical writing, layout, graphic design, package design, publication, and product fulfillment. I went on to work for a small business incubator that did large-scale data entry for UPS using my previous employer's PCBoard software. 6 nights a week I ran cleanup on 2.1 million average lines of data entry from data entry typists all over the country. Life then turned me upside down when I went on vacation to meet family I didn't know I had - then returned home to find that in my absence, our business incubator had been sold, and my job was being moved to Mexico City. It would have been a sweet gig - house and car provided - but it was a non-starter with a new family of one 4 year old and another on the way, so instead, I moved to be closer to my "new" family on the other side of the country and found a new job living in the "Deep South."

It was culture shock to be sure! I began customer-facing work with Computerland, and then was quickly recruited to be part of a novel team of hands-on troubleshooters in a small for-profit company owned by a non-profit (private hospital/medical group) which was designed to procure IT equipment at wholesale and resell those goods and service expertise to the non-profit at cost. I was adjunct to the hospital IS department, and did everything from replacing toner to installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining some of the first teleradiography systems for spoiled-rotten radiologists who didn't want to get dressed and go into the hospital whenever they were on-call. The whole thing was great in concept, but the people placed in charge were largely corrupt. I know there were hair-raising equipment and cash losses revealed in audits - and there may have been some indictments as well. I saw the writing on the wall and bailed about 6 months before they were shut down, and I started my own consulting business. There, I did cabling, network design and troubleshooting, desktop support, and WAN design, configuration, and support. At one point, I was part of the installation of the first private-practice-owned GE color 3-D CAT scan diagnostic system east of the Mississippi for a cardiology practice. My clientele focused on the medical contacts I had established working for the hospital, and included pulmonary, neurology, gynecology, radiology, and pediatric practices. Then HIPAA came along, and the licensing and insurance mandates for IT consulting became too expensive for a small business. So what next?

I had contacts similar to my medical practice contacts in the legal world. My birthmom (the "new" family I found) had over 35 years as a legal secretary and paralegal, and she suggested I pick up law office clients. Bwahahahaha... NO. I worked for a few lawyers when I started out on my own. Lawyers in my experience are the worst for not paying their bills. There's one out there that still owes me over $2k for services that I "never finished to his satisfaction" because he kept adding and adding and NEVER PAID A DIME. "So sue me," he said with a sneer. F-lawyers... Just sayin'.

So I went to work for a small shop that made tolling systems. We built the networks, software, automation systems, video security, auditing systems... Everything that moved, lit up, counted axles, vehicles, and money, generated reports, monitored employee time and money handling - it was all done out of a little 5-man office. I was the networking guy, and I automated all the remote control and monitoring systems, KVM access, VPN WAN that connected all the toll sites, email systems, and built and maintained all the servers, routers, kiosks, and workstations. I did that for over 17 years until a little over two weeks ago when the VP of Ops and the HR director flew down from the corporate office to greet me at the office one morning. A piss-poor severance and my "wiped" Lenovo P17 Gen2 laptop was all my 17 years were worth.

Which is what brought me here. My laptop was "corporation property" and had a BIOS password. When they wiped it, instead of removing the password (which I obviously knew), they changed it. Unfortunately, they fat-fingered the change or something, because neither they nor I have been able to get back in since they handed it back to me. Jerks.

Oh, yeah... I was also diagnosed recently at just shy of 59 years old as having Autism Level 2 - which is why I'm either silent, or I info-dump. So I have that going for me.

I'm hoping to learn a few things here, but first and foremost - I really need help getting back into my laptop!

              Hello,

Just a middle aged guy with an interest in hardware and getting the most out of my tech. I came here to get help with a used laptop since this seems like the best place to get professional and courteous help.

I don't think I can be of much help with other member's problems so I will most likely be a lurker most of the time.

Oh, and I have lived in Japan for the last 20 years so...

                        Hi everyone!

I'm glad to join this forum. My name is Lukasz, and I'm from Poland. I run a small business focused on computer and phone repairs. I've been in the industry for a while, and I'm always looking to learn something new, share knowledge, and exchange experiences with others in the field.

I'm hoping to both contribute and benefit from this community — whether it's troubleshooting tricky repairs, discussing tools and techniques, or just staying up to date with the latest tech.

Looking forward to connecting with you all!

                        Best regards

Hello, everyone. I am from Ukraine. I repair phones and laptops. Since now the repair of phones has slowly begun to be reduced to the replacement of body parts, displays and other parts, I began to switch to laptop repair. For a short time I have been studying bios unlocking and bios recovery, but it is very difficult to acquire knowledge in this area, so I sometimes have to ask for help.
