Anyone ever replace an 80 pin surface mount IC successfully?

The last time I tried, the replacement IC shifted slightly while reheating.
It was all downhill from there.

I have a bad HDMI switch IC in an otherwise beautiful 55" Sony.

I would just solder it with fine tip.

You just reminded me of something I need to buy.

So I guess the heat gun method is only for removal of the old IC.
That makes sense... can't go wrong with one pin at a time I guess.

Although I think I may also need a stereo microscope... this thing is so tiny I have a hard time counting the pins with my magnifying reading glasses.

A stereo microscope WILL make your life easier for this kind of stuff. I just replaced a 144 pin ADV7623 HDMI switch in a Marantz receiver with one. Would have been impossible for me without it.

          But looking for holder suggestions.
iPhone is OK for occasional use at home, but I agree that microscope is the right tool to do things properly.

Yeah, I ruined a very nice Denon receiver trying to replace a similar chip. Time I got the right tools. A few traces disappeared... I guess it's still possible to fix.

This sounds like a plan. Maybe I can even fix my old iPhone 5 that I messed up while replacing the battery. They put some tiny surface mount transistors right in the first place anyone would think to pry the battery out. It still works but no home button or power switch.

For the record, when I was in my 20's back in 1993 or so I successfully replaced a similar microprocessor with just a Weller and my younger eyes. : )

edit: oh I see what you meant. I only recently discovered my iPhone's magnifier feature. Comes in handy.

I would suggest to get any microscope. I jused to solder Motorolas processors for years without it and can say its possible. But once i got some vintage microscope with removabke multiplier eye magnifying things its make me life so easier and no stressful.

you must already have previous experience in this type of soldering I personally use hot air to desolder it and also to solder the new one but at 99% all the pins never solder so you will have to go over with a fine tip soldering iron, the things you need to keep in mind they are quality tin and quality flux and obviously you have to get a microscope otherwise it is impossible

Good information. I did use a heat gun. I forget the details of what went wrong, as this was a while ago, but I appreciate the tips.

I'm happy to say I finally found the right replacement board for the Sony TV.

I use the Denon for music only.
So I guess all is right with the world.
                    Thanks.

It's like any skill, it just needs to be practiced, use scrap boards for learning, hot air or fine tip, even using the solder braid needs practice.
