LG OLED 55B8 High Standby Power Consumption

    Hi All,

I have an LG OLED55B8SLC.BEKWLJP which consumes 24W in standby ad infinitum. I've eliminated other causes like WiFi, pixel refresh etc. I'm pretty sure the fault/design flaw is in the PSU because when I disconnect the main and TCON boards, the PSU still consumes 24W.

It would cost me around £30 / $40 a year in electricity for no good reason if I didn't unplug it every evening. Not a great deal of money but if other LG TVs do the same, that's a whole load of unnecessary planet warming.

The service manual unfortunately doesn't contain any schematics just block diagrams and fault flowcharts that conclude with "replace PSU" board. I have done that anyway and there is no improvement.

I would be very grateful if someone has any advice or a schematic (paid or gratis) for the part described as PCB: EAX67858001 or LG P/N: EAY64749001 so that I can do my own investigation.

    Thank you very much.

LG's website standby info for the OLED55B8PLA, 55'' LG OLED TV - B8 attached.
If it's 24W in standby I would double check the power meter you are using to measure it to ensure it's not a false reading. Nowhere near LG's figure for standby power.

If you didn't already, try measuring another tv with the meter.

What meter did you use to measure the Wattage? Something similar to Kill-A-Watt?

As far as I know there is a program active in standby that improves the screen, you do not see any picture, but the device uses a little more power. It is a similar system to plasma TVs, a kind of white wash, but you don't see that with an Oled. It should avoid panel burn-in, although everyone knows that it does not prevent burn-in 100%.

LG OLEDs have a feature that if the TV is ON after 4 hours or more and it shuts down, it will run pixel refresh for 10 minutes, and each 2000 hours of runtime it runs a 1 hour pixel refresh when shut down.

OP said "ad infinium", so we can guess they measured it more than 10 minutes and was still consuming the 28W. Maybe he was unlucky and the TV just hit a 2000/4000+ hour mark and ran for 1 hour when they decided to measure it.

Yeah about burn-in, when you have any pixels on the panel that are not black, it's burning in, there's nothing to prevent that, the pixels are being used and losing their maximum brightness very slowly, it may take 20 years on low OLED brightness but it will still happen, pixel refresh is meant to clear temporary retention.
