1981 RCA Selectavision VCR odd noises at caps

Hey y'all, long time no post. I guess that's a good thing though.

Anyways, I have had a project vcr in my closet for a couple years now waiting to be fixed. It is a pristine, 1981 RCA Selectavision top loading vcr- original box, wired remote, manuals, etc. Never been used and had been stored indoors it appears.

After replacing all the gummy belts, cleaning everything off and carefully oiling certain pivot points and spinning parts- I get picture, though its slowed and kind of garbled. The choppiness onscreen corresponds with two things I've noticed - one, the spool on the right (that winds during playback) seems to spin free then stop momentarily, then wind like normal again - and two, when that happens, or just before, there is a faint click near the back of the unit near the audio/video OUTs. There is a board there with caps... nothing else to make noise in that area.

Do I just pull every cap and replace it on that board, or what?

Oddly enough, I ordered a spare RCA top loader for parts and sure enough- the caps on the same board are making a faint click (though this unit has zero playback).

Any help appreciated! I'd love to keep this unit around as it is in perfect cosmetic shape, and I'm a sucker for woodgrain.

I've never heard a cap click before, unless there is some internal arc happening. By now after 37yrs I would do a re-cap as the caps may have become dry and would fail.

Good idea, and definitely on the horizon- I was just really hoping someone out there with RCA top loader (or just VCR) experience had heard of clicky caps on these units. I have TWO identical models that click from the same cluster of caps on the back board! I'll take pictures of the area when I remove that board for cap replacement.

        Thanks!

I'm not sure if this model has reeds in this particular area- I'll double check when I get home though.

Well I have been repairing VCRs since the Betamax days. You know Betamax...The slightly smaller tapes? In those Betamax VCRs the Head and tracking circuit were the main issues other that the usual worn belt or roller tires.

i would try a few different tapes after cleaning the heads ..
i used to find doing a ff play for a while could cure tracking type issues .

Going FF after replacing belts and oiling/greasing a few spots is how I eventually got it to display something on screen... definitely seemed to help.

Nice. I've been looking for a working(woodgrain) betamax to complete my collection. I have betas- but no player. How will I know how my beta copy of mad max holds up compared to my vhs!?!

I am looking for a Betamax machine to buy, myself. I have few tapes I would like to transfer to DVD. Plus I convert VHS to DVD as a business for those who want to save their wedding, birthdays, anniversary memories.

                      Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

Seasonic B12 BC-550 – barely 2 years old and with BAD CAPS already!

I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

Identifying caps on an old Zoom 9000
                      by Paxman_Swede
                      Hello!

I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

I have studied the board and...

Sony RCD-W3 Deck A (Playback only) not playing CDs (Disk Error) repair
                      by goodpsusearch
Recently I was given for free a Sony RCD-W3 with the following symptoms, CD recorder drive reads CDs without any issues (haven't tested recording function yet because I don't intend to burn CDs on that machine) but the reader drive shows disc error after some seconds of it trying to read CD. Tried both CD-Rs and commercial audio CDs with same results.

First thing to do was to clean the lens but that didn't change anything. Googling the issue revealed that this is a common issue on several Sony CD recorder machines and the culprit is SMD electrolytic caps located on the PCB bellow...

Help with switching power supply caps
                      by captain150
I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...
