Samsung LE37S71B dead HDMI and tuner

Good day folks. What do you make of this TV: it turns on (by remote only - more on that later), displays the OSDs fine, but doesn't tune any channels and the HDMI input doesn't work either. The VGA input works though and displays proper picture. The buttons on the unit itself don't work at all either, not even sporadically like they sometimes do when they fail. Not even the power button. The only way to operate the TV is by remote. I don't know if the issues are related. I took the cover off and had a mess around with the board. I'm pretty sure it's a hardware issue and the end result will be a board swap, but I thought I'd talk about it nonetheless.

I tried going into the service menu to reset it just for the sake of it and there's something wrong with it indeed since I noticed the "panel hours" (or something like that) was 0...unless it's been reset beforehand which I doubt, because it belonged to my boss who doesn't really have the skills to go in there and mess with the service menu. Resetting was of no use. I tried replacing the EEPROM and the same thing happened: no input on HDMI (haven't tried tuning channels, but if HDMI doesn't work it's almost certain the tuner doesn't also), so there was that.

I then had a look at the connector itself just to see if it's loose or anything and on a whim put my meter across the diode I pictured up close. I got a short, though without a schematic and without following the traces in depth it could also be a low value resistor in parallel with it. MT8293ae (large chip near the connector) could also be faulty and the replacement cost is by no means worth it, since I couldn't find it locally and where I did find it, it costs as much as a functional board, plus you have to factor in labour, so I think this one's done for....what do you guys think ?

If reflowing or baking doesn't care of this, then lightning has been in it and at that point I'd be tossing it. If the HDMI slot goes directly to the main IC, thats not good at all if lightning got it.

Strange how it still sort-of works and shows no burnt spots, though of course that doesn't mean it's alright.

Yep, that is correct. Most of the time it takes out the HDMI. You see, if a HDMI port goes straight to the main CPU and the HDMI port is bad, you can either put in a new main IC or replace the board. Ic's can fail different ways too. They can fail and be totally dead, but yet they look A1. They can partially fail, in which there are limited functions. The HDMI ports are very susceptible to lightning or similar, if something is plugged in. Had lightning strike a little 14" dish that was mounted 3ft above ground, with trees on the back side of the dish. Lightning stuck nearby and it took out the sat receiver and the plasma tv. The sat receiver was a goner and the TV got a new main board.

Not gonna bother - I'm gonna grab a used board from a local auction and it's a done deal

I figured you would end up like that.

It's the most sensitive thing to do I reckon. No need to mope over it
