I have a Toshiba TV that a 5w 1.8 ohm resistor went bad. All I have on hand is a 5w 3 ohm resistor. Would I be hurting anything by using this?

Re: Toshiba bad resistor
It sounds like the relay that is supposed to bypass that inrush current limiter is not functioning, better check the relay contact and the functioning of the relay, it is very common failure in Toshiba TVs.Never stop learning

Re: Toshiba bad resistor
You can pull the cover off the relay and confirm if it is working. If it is functioning then clean contacts. Will need pictures of power board when you ask which relay it is.Last edited by dskall; 04-04-2017, 09:24 AM.I assume no responsibility for any stupid suggestions I might post.

Re: Toshiba bad resistor
Someone else worked on this board... Horrible soldering and almost every point needed cleaned. Relay tested good and there is no fluctuating power at all. Idk if the horrible job that was done could have caused it but there was tons of corrosion from what looks like the rosin being left on. TV is on and working just don't know if it's safe to go up to the higher ohms.

Re: Toshiba bad resistor
When you said the relay tested good, what is the contact resistance? The higher resistor's resistance the less inrush current but the AC Voltage applied to circuit will be less due to more Vdrops on the resistor so the circuit may not start up properly.
What you have to test when the correct resistor is installed is to test and see if there is Vdrops on the resistor or not, it should not be if the relay is OK. You can use 3 Ohms for experiment to verify the relay condition for now.Last edited by budm; 04-04-2017, 09:45 AM.Never stop learning

Re: Toshiba bad resistor
Right now the important part is to verify that the relay is good for sure otherwise you will just burn up the new resistor, does that make sense?Never stop learning

Re: Toshiba bad resistor
So as long as the Vdrops on that resistor is staying low like that then the relay's contacts are good for now.Never stop learning

Re: Toshiba bad resistor
I would if you are going to sell the TV, but for your own use you can keep that sub resistor in place.Never stop learning
