    Sams. 50Q97HD --No Sound...

After replacing the X-SUS we got the set going only to find no sound--not a bit. Picture is fine and DVB retuned no problem Ive not tried any different inputs such as HDMI etc yet.

Checking through the sound settings, the only two available for adjustment/alteration are AVL -on or off and SRS -on or off.

All other options greyed out, but says Internal speakers are on.

Must be doing summit silly--just can't think straight tonight....

Maybe a factory reset ? Had a Le40r88 (I think) no sound after reset worked fine.

      Tried a reset, no change.

Tried the mainboard--bunged a 42" mainboard in, expected and got half a picture--but Still no sound....

Checked all the supplies from PSU, all fine....

Turned out to be the bloody headphone-socket switch faulty!

Aye--Probably, I'll get to that when I fix the PSU from 42Q96 I robbed the side-input board from!

Haha fair enough btw what work you going to do on this ? Make sure to:

Recap Y and X main 680uf 25v caps even if they test good
Resolder all heatsinks and joints on the Psu
              Recap Psu (most output caps)
Maybe add a fan to the Ymain only if it uses the horrid 88N30W fets which are prone to blowing on these
              Heatsink all buffer Ic's

This is just some of the mods I do on these so much to go wrong. Got another 50PFP5532D/05 which is basically Q97 got alot to do on it lol

                Re: Sams. 50Q97HD --No Sound...

Strangely--This Q97 has only 350 hours on it!

It was spotless inside, but the X had failed and I had a good clean spare, so fitted that.

What I find with them--inc this one, is the mounting screws on all/most of the big transistors of Y and X are usually loose....

I had one a while back that had been running for half hour or so after a PSU repair--the heatsinks of Y-SUS were oddly cool.

Tightening the screws--It got the expected temperature!

--That one in 'Pangoo' guise I sold to neighbour a year or so ago, still running well, outlasting a new 50" 'Laurus' Vestel turd, that his dad wrecked with the wrong stand-screws--Straight through the T-Con!.

TBH--I usually use 35V 1000uF to replace those troublesome Y-SUS caps--And the one on the X top l/h corner that everyone forgets about....

Once sorted, these ain't bad old sets, good panels in them I find.

                  Re: Sams. 50Q97HD --No Sound...

Wow 350 hours how odd lol never seen one with them screws loose slightly odd so will look out for that in future. These panels are rock solid only seen 2 fail and both were because of the people who I used to work with were (and still are) useless at repairing Tv's and broke the ribbons off lol and that was when I couldn't repair them ribbons.

Too bad the scan and other driver electronics are not as reliable as the Pdp's themselves these could last along time.

My theory on why these fail alot is because of Shitsung's (Samsung) engineering these Tv's need fans ffs ! They run so hot, Psu is dissipating 400w idle and more under load they get soo hot its scary, enough to be painful to put your hand on top after running for a while !

                    Re: Sams. 50Q97HD --No Sound...

I believe this is a problem with a lot of sets-- Heat.

I have a Panasonic TX-P50G20 at the moment, that thing gets hot--Or did till I added some extra case fans on the top, opened up the bottom of the rear cover and added a couple to the SUS boards, with extra (Big old L.G. IPM) heatsinks toaded across the original Y-SUS heatsinks...
                    .
Thing's practically is stone cold now....

Even the LED types, the actual power-parts can run pretty damned hot in some, no wonder they have a short life.

                    The price we pay--For Cheapness.

Like the LED's themselves. Have you ever put your finger on one without the lens fitted and its on?--Dont! It'll burn you! The package size for those TV backlight LED's specifies they are rated at 0.2W and should be heatsinked, guess they rely on the board copper, but then stuff it all up by overruning them!!....

                      Re: Sams. 50Q97HD --No Sound...

Yep, odd thing is my Pioneer kuro 428XD Plasma from 2007 even after about 6 hours of constant use watching Tv barely is warm, Psu is the hottest part. There is only one fan in my Tv which is over the Psu lol the Sus boards in Kuros barely get warm which I find odd I also serviced a PDP43MXE (or whatever) and it didnt have any fans ran as cold as anything.

But seriously these Samsung Plasmas need fans if they flipping added them they could live at least 5* longer than they do.

Also with Led's ive done it and paid the price for it lol burnt finger. Leda also need alot of heatsinking big time they run hot ! I have a customer built Led lamp which I use as a light it has several strips of Led's I have heatsunk it but wow that burns your finger after a while lol. Check this out:
