    LG 60PV450 Power Issue

Hey guys. First off I want to say I've tried looking around the forum in hopes of finding a fix for my TV. I haven't found anything that caught my eye, but that may be because I just didn't understand what I was reading. My electronics experience is next to none and I'm having a hard time diagnosing what is wrong with my LG 60PV450 plasma. So, if there is a thread you think I should look at, please direct me there.

That being said...the TV was given to me for free from my brother in law who didn't feel like dealing with it. He said that it was working fine, then one day it just wouldn't turn on. When plugged in the TV shows the red standby light. I'll try turning on the TV from both the power button on the actual set and the power button on the remote. Neither do anything and I can't get the TV to do anything. I only hear a click when you plug the TV in and again whenever I unplug it.

From the little research i did online, I figured it might be the power supply unit. I ordered a new board from ShopJimmy, replaced the old board with the new one, but unfortunately that did nothing for me and the TV still does not power on.

I really don't know where to go from here and don't know how to tell if any of the other boards are the problem. I was really hoping I'd just replace that power supply board and the thing would turn on.

If anybody is willing to give me any help I'd sure appreciate it. Please let me know what additional information I'd need to give and I can get that to you. I'm attaching a picture of the back of the open TV as a starting point.

    2 Things:

1- upload good clear pictures of all the circuit boards.

2- do you have a digital multimeter?

      Unplug this connector here:

      Power on the tv.

Do you get an image on screen?

        Thank you for your response!

I've attached photos of each board. Please let me know if you need more pictures and I can get them.

I disconnected that wire you told me to, plugged in the TV, and still nothing. Pressed power button on both remote and on the actual TV. Black screen with solid red standby light.

I do own a digital multimeter, so I can follow any directions you may have for me. I just don't have a clue where to even start with this project.

        Thanks again.

Ok plug that connector back in.

Now, on the control board (smallest board in the tv)
You'll find 2 holes, I can see them located here:

With a piece of wire (paper clip etc) connect the 2 holes.

Now, Disconnect the lvds cable (the flat cable with the blue tab) labelled P31.

            Power on the tv.

            Do you get test patterns?

If so you have a faulty Main AV Board.

If not, you will need to check some voltages.

I will try this out first thing this evening when I return home from work.

So I did what you said...see attached picture. Pressed power button and still can't get anything to happen. Blank screen with solid, red standby light.

Should anything be happening when I hit the power button?

                Any more ideas?

Thanks again for any continued help.

                  That's fine.

Leave that bit of wire in place for now.

I need a close up picture of this part of the board.

I need to be able to see the legend table

                      Re: LG 60PV450 Power Issue

Ok so we need to connect STBY with RL-ON

Disconnect the mainboard form the power supply. (At the mainboard end)

And with a piece of wire jump the points mention above together.

                      Power on the tv.

Do you now get test patterns?

If you still don't get test patters.
Unplug both the y-sustain and z-sustain.

Plug back in the tv and test both these test points marked VS-TP and VA-TP

(Red probe to the marked wire, black probe to the Tvs chassis. Multimeter in DC volts)

                          Vs should be roughly 200v
                          Va should be roughly 60v

hammie, sorry to jump in on this thread but would this work with a samsung set? i am not getting any more help on my thread and i have tried the steps you offered to jwarnol22

i jumpered the logic board and i did not show any test patterns on the screen but you can hear it cycle thru the test patterns and the voltages would go up and down
i dont want to jumper anything on if it will cause damage

Ok. So I disconnect the power, jump the wires, reconnect power, and try to power on?

This might be a dumb question, but does it matter which STBY point you connect to RL-ON? It looks like the two points you connect in that picture are on the same side, correct? Also, what kind of wire are you using? Will a paper clip work with this step as well?

I'm still at work, but I'll report back to you later.

Thanks for hanging in there with me and sorry for being so new at this!

                                Re: LG 60PV450 Power Issue

Ok. So I disconnected the power power supply, jumped the wires like you said, reconnected the power supply, then plugged in the TV. I got blue streaks to come on the screen (I've attached a picture of this along with the ports that I jumped with speaker wire). Is this what you refer to as a test pattern because I'm not even quite sure what a test pattern is?

Does it sound like I did the steps right because again I'm very new to all of this?

More information: when I plugged in the TV with the wires jumped, both the YSUS and ZSUS were buzzing. The CTRL board also had a flashing green light. I did not have that paper clip in the CTRL board from the previous steps, so please let me know if you need that connected again.

I have not checked the voltages since I got something to come up on the screen.

Look forward to hearing back from you!

                                  Read post #9

I never asked you to remove your paper clip joining the 2 holes on the control board.
                                  Put it back in place.

Test patterns should look like.... Well... Test patterns!
Full Red screen, then blue, green, selection greys blacks and whites etc

Btw that blue bar isn't a good sign. Panel might be bad.

                                    Re: LG 60PV450 Power Issue

Sorry about that...I can't reiterate enough that I really have no experience with electronics. I'm a structural engineer by trade and this is my first time dealing with electronics repair.

I put the CTRL board back to how it was in the previous step with the paper clip and retried this morning. The TV now shows test patterns (and I now know what a test pattern looks like). It cycled through all the colors, etc. The blue streak that I sent you a picture of still appears on the screen while the test patterns show.

I'll wait to hear back from you on what to do next.

                                      Re: LG 60PV450 Power Issue

Well unfortunately it's going to be bad news.

The 'not turning on fault' is caused by a faulty Main Board or maybe even just has faulty remote receiver and buttons.... But because it's LG And they are notorious for bad main board id say it's that. (You can do some tests to find out if it's the mainboard or the buttons quite easily by monitoring the voltgage to the buttons and pressing them at the same time, the voltage should jump around as you press them.) if it does, it's almost certainly a bad mainboard.

The bad news: the 'blue streak' is caused by the screen (panel IC) and almost certainly won't be fixable without replacing the whole screen.

                                      The good news (I suppose)

Is you can guarantee that every board in the tv is working (apart from the main board.)
So you can sell them off, they are probably reasonably valuable.

                                        Re: LG 60PV450 Power Issue

Darn it. I'll go home later and try to test the power buttons then. Just curious, if it really is a faulty main board, couldn't you just replace that board in hopes of making the set work again? The main board is the one on the lower right with all the HDMI/component inputs, correct?

As far as the blue line, what is the main cause for that? Again just curious. Is it from something like overuse or physical damage or something?

Appreciate your time and the help you've given me!
