I have an Olevia 255TFHD 55" LCD that I purchased in 2008 for a good price after Olevia got themselves in some financial trouble. The initial set I received from Newegg had backlight issues. Within an hour of turning the set on, the backlight would almost turn off and then come back up to full brightness in a split second, sometimes once, sometimes it would do this in rapid succession. When it would light back up, the set made the same high pitched sound that it normally makes when the CCFLs light up when you turn the set on. I exchanged the set for another, and it's been fine until recently. Now within minutes of turning the set on, the backlight will dim and turn back on in a split second. Just like with the initial set, it may do this once, or a couple of times, then all is well. It seems fine after one bout of this behavior, but I think I've seen it happen again during extended viewing.
I'm not planning on repairing it until it quits altogether, but I'd like to know what to look at first when that happens. Loose connections? Bad CCFL tubes? Bad inverter(s)? I think the set has multiple inverters, and it appears the whole screen dims when it happens, so I don't know if that rules them out. I'm also wondering if the set is just poorly engineered, being that the first one I had in 2008 did the same thing new out of the box.
