Re: LG 50PC55 Plasma–multiple attempts to turn on; but now no image... help

If I'm not mistaken this TVs Vizio variant has capacitor problems on the power supply that prevents it from starting up properly. If I remember there's like 5 or 6 of them that need replacing. It's been a few years that I had one come into me but this is why I remember
Did I leave the soldering iron on?

update - sorry for the delay...

so heated the board as shown in the pictures and when i got to the two black rectangular blocks (white block above it, and a blue one above the white one), the tv turned on.

Now, i'm assuming it's one or both of these blocks which are a bit dud. Of course, it could also be the case that the heat diffused and heated up another otherwise dud part... I didn't have the presence of mind to check out the black capacitors on the left hand side of the board but might do that tomorrow just in case. So anyway, given that i'm still not sure, the question is, is it possible to source replacement bits on their own and if so, where from? Also, I've no idea how to identify/name them in order to buy them and then, on top of that, am not sure how much of a complex/detailed job it is in terms of removing and replacing offending components. I have soldered in the past but anything more complex than that might be challenging.

The alternative is to switch out the whole board but that might have the same fault. There are various part numbers on the board including EAX32412301 EAY32957901. I've seen a couple of ebay uk -

      and

      http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LG-EAX3241...IAAOSwAYtWOL~j

so that's where i'm at right now.

          i see a few bulged/leaking caps

i circled the ones in red that are bulged
but i would replace all of the ones i circled

the one i circled in green im not sure if that is a cap or not

if it is i would replace it as well

this is really a low cost repair

You need to replace those capacitors and your tv should be fixed. What are their values ?

Sorry for thedelay. Received the part ordered through asleep on eBay. Looks suspiciously straightforward..l will try tomorrow to swap out capacitors and report back. Thanks again to all.

update: good news... bad news... good news... bad news.... good/weird news

good news: replaced the caps as instructed. seemed straight forward enough

bad news: forgot one screw on the board.

                      good news: the tv worked.

bad news: 10 minutes later, 3 very loud pops (and much hysterical screaming from the direction of my wife and our 2 daughters) - a second between each pop, maybe. tv switched itself off but red light still on.

good/weird news: hit the power button the remote... and the tv came back on. it's been on for about 15 minutes now, no pops or anything.

so: any ideas? i imagine the worse thing can happen, if left running as is, is for the whole tv to become knackered completely. am going to switch it off but leave it running for a while tomorrow and see what happens. if you think this is dangerous, let me know.

thanks again for all the advice.

maybe as you have replaced the capacitors there maybe a little too much flux left on the board if you did not clean if afterwards, some solder ive noticed leaves a lot and maybe the flux allowed it to ark over the tracks hence the popping noise maybe worth a check.

i would remove the back cover again and check the caps

did you replace the new caps in the correct through holes?
meaning you might have reversed the polarities

well, tbh, didn't even think about polarity (rank amateur, i know... appalling!) but... it's been fine since. if it is an issue, i guess i'll find out in due course... anyway, thanks again to all - especially reeceyburger and jose for being so helpful throughout.

maybe worth taking the back of and checking the polarity of the capacitors as it could/maybe be a fire hazard i guess.

okay will do - didn't realise the dashes on one side were indicators of polarity. thanks again

yes thats the negative side of the capacitor theres usually a marking of some kind on the circuit board too look at one of the capacitors you have not changed you should see what i mean

the tv seems to be still working fine. go figure. again, thanks to all

I would suggest you check it asap ! You could have an arching issue (due to lose screw) or something else which could damage the tv even further.

okay - i did that today and couldn't really see anything loose or crappy in terms of excess solder. i didn't go as far as taking out the caps to see if they were in the right way round. put it back together and it still seems to be ok. thanks again, reeceyburger
