    DVD interference on old TV

I just recapped an old 12" Zenith B&W TV I had sitting around in the basement. (Why? Because I like to watch Doctor Who in the way it was meant to be viewed ;-) Besides, it's somewhat nostalgic since my parents didn't get a color set until 1981 - before that it was the old Motorola my Mom bought off the assembly line where she worked when they used to make TVs here in Chicago.)

Anyway, the picture is nice and sharp now. However, when I set it atop my Lasonic DVD player, I get diagonal interference lines in the picture. Is this typical? I don't know if TVs made before the 'age of DVD' didn't have adequate shielding because this sort of thing wasn't a problem back then or if something else is the problem. I'm not a EE some I'm hoping perchance someone know a thing or two about this.

FYI, I had to patch the DVD through an old Zenith VCR (80s vintage I bought from a pawn shop when at the Infantry school during the first Gulf War) because it does not have RCA inputs. So RCA plugs into the VCR and then antenna cable to the TV.

I did solder a largish .1 uF/250V class X suppression cap across the input AC line just because I had an extra and there was nothing of the sort there (even my 1979 Sony portable cassette/radio has these).

I recommend you take this question over to the Audiokarma.org forums, post it in the Rectangular Tube and Solid State section. They are dedicated to vintage TV's just like yours, and they will probably be able to help you with it.

I think you need an actual RF converter.
Converts the RCA into a standard RF signal like from an antenna.

I'm thinking the one in that VCR is only intended to convert color signals.

I bought a single input one a couple months ago at Best Buy for around $10.

It replaced a 'fancy' $25? one that auto-switched between inputs.
Unfortunately it would auto-switch to things that weren't turn on (and 'get stuck' there) in the middle of movies which was really annoying. I'd have to pull the plug and 'reboot' it to get it to switch back where it was supposed to be.

Point is, if you choose one with multiple inputs get one with a MANUAL switch for the input selector.

i cannot get rid of the interference in the video on this 1.1v and i have tried everything!

i recapped the entire foxlink psu with rubycon caps of the exact uf needed. i also purchased a delta psu to see if the different brand would change anything and it did not. i recapped the entire motherboard except for about 5 of the 22uf caps. i used rubycon on everything except the five in front of the processors. i used 5 nichicon polymer caps there. i soldered a wire to each screw hole of the psu and soldered one wire to the metal outer shell and one to a screw hole on the motherboard(to make sure it was all grounded well). i also recently tried disconnecting the power cables from the dvd drive...

Panasonic Plasma screen interference on left half of screen
          by Zelek11
My Panasonic Plasma model P55VT50 has started displaying "interference" on just the left half of the screen only (left when facing the screen). Sometimes it's concentrated in about the first 30 seconds after startup, then disappears. Other times it's fine at startup and then randomly does it later on. When it flashes the interference it's very quick and doesn't stay on the screen unless it flashes repeatedly in a row.

This image is a screen shot from a video I took. This is an example of the interference at its worst. Often the interference is much smaller...

Zenith Z50PJ240 - White Screen with 'Power Only' displayed
          by cmonkey
Turned on my lovely plasma and after about 30 seconds the screen below showed up. None of the inputs are responsive, just the red light flashes when I push it. Remote doesn't work either. To turn it off I need to unplug it and when I plug it in again it turns back on to this screen.

I only found one reference to this issue with a different model but it didn't look super reliable. Only mentioned a 'main board fault'. The main board for this one is on ebay for $34 so might need to go with that.

          Anyone seen this before?

Thinking about it some more, it happened...

          HP1955L Buzzing noise & interference
          by stvhop
Hello, This is my first post so please forgive me if I miss out some vital info.
I have a problem with my HP1955L monitor from 2005.
The first thing to say is that it is still basically working, ie the picture is fine.
However it makes an electrical buzzing sound. I know all monitors make some some of hum, but this is louder and more of a buzz.
The volume of the noise seems to be dependent on how hard the monitor is working; switched on with a blank screen -> no sound; small dialog (like OSD only) -> minor buzzing; full screen picture -> loud buzzing.

Acer Ferrari F-20" monitor display interference and replacement capacitor selection
          by ADV
          Good day everybody

I hope I'm posting in the right section - I am new to this awesome forum.

I have received an ACER Ferrari F-20" LCD Monitor to repair.

It produces interference lines on the image displayed and slowly rotates across the whole screen, with respect to the center of the screen. One rotation takes about 4 minutes and the cycle repeats over and over.
For some reason the On Screen Display Menu is not affected when switched on with the Menu button.

I opened the external 18V power supply and see no bulged capacitors...
