I recently picked up a Polaroid TV for cheap. The owner had been using it as a computer monitor, and said that after a thunderstorm, it will now randomly turn itself off. I tested it on HDMI, and it will stay on a few minutes, then turn off. I also found that when trying to adjust the resolution from my computer via the HDMI port, it would turn the TV off immediately. When it turns off, there is a loud pop heard through the speakers. It will turn right back on without having to wait or unplug anything, then repeat the turn off after a few minutes.
All capacitors look good on both the main board and power board. No bulges or leaking on any of them. I was also able to perform simple tests on the caps with a volt meter, and was able to see the resistance increase while the probes where connected to the caps, though on the main board, a few would show a constant, low resistance.
My question is, do the symptoms sound like a shorted capacitor? What other components can I test with just a digital volt meter?
