LG 60" 60PV450 lower half flickering where white, only on HDMI

LG 60PV450, no suffix in model #, build date shows mid 2011.

I noticed last night that the lower half of the screen would flicker when white is present on screen. I mainly noticed it while playing a game and the HUD that was normally white with your health and all, started flickering greenish. Basically, any text would turn reddish, bluish, greenish and flicker back and forth between those colors and white and do it very quickly. I then noticed it on the DVR guide whenever white text was present for channel listings.

I had read that Y-sus was a common issue with this model but then I played the game via component and all colors were normal. I could go back and forth between component and HDMI with a system plugged into each port at the same time and component would have white text and HDMI would have flickering greenish text. The flickering being only on HDMI makes me think it's the main board. I swapped between HDMI ports and the white would flicker on each port and changing HDMI cables did nothing.

Also, I will randomly see portions of the bottom third of the screen flicker even if no white is present. It is most noticeable when white is present on the bottom half of the screen though.

This is a common issue on these models. It is caused by some cold solder joints under the Y-sustain and Z-sustain. Easily fixed. Can you post a picture of your Y- and Z-sustain boards, I will highlight where the solder needs to be reworked.

Ok, I will get some pics here shortly. Does it not matter that there is not flickering when using component input and it's only present on HDMI? I thought that isolated it to HDMI/main board but it seems I'm wrong.

It depends entirely on how bright the image is, and what the frame-rate of the image is. Can you possibly show a picture of the fault?

I tried to take pictures/video of the flickering but it doesn't show up on either. The text appears white in pics and the video just shows white text without the flicker that the naked eye can see.

I was just able to capture some of the flickering on video and it does look similar to that YouTube link. The rainbow effect in certain light color spots is similar. It looks like his TV retains a ghosting of the BBC logo on the bottom left and I noticed that an ESPN logo shows up only while mine is flickering and amid the colorful flicker. The logo is not present otherwise.

Good, as that is the same issue as I am thinking of, cold solder joints. It is probably the most common issue with these LGs, 60PV450/50PV450 and the PZ and some PM series LG Smart plasmas.

Is there a picture showing which boards I need to examine and which parts of the board specifically to look at? IIRC, the Y is on the rear left of the TV and Z is on the rear right? Other than that, I haven't seen much info.

I don't have any for your exact model as I've only seen the PZ series doing this, but if you post some pictures of the boards in your set I can highlight the component in question.

In that picture, the three white clips on the bottom right, how do I remove them? Do I squeeze the ends?

I was able to separate them. Just took some finesse. Y-sus looks good but Z-sus has one post/solder that is black and crusted. Will resolder and see how it goes.

Yes, they were pretty tight. With all screws removed, the board would hang there just by those connectors and a slight tug would not budge it. I took a tiny flat head screwdriver and inserted it between the two pieces and then twisted it, pushing the connectors apart. I did that repeatedly on each connector back and forth until they all were wiggling free. Same for Y-sus board which has 5 of those connectors.

As mentioned, Z-sus had one charred post on the back side of the board, under the coils and a couple other joints at the coils that were in the early stages of cracking. Y-sus looked mostly okay but I went ahead and soldered all 6 points on each board and it is now back together and working fine.

Nice, I use this panel for my gaming. I got it with low hours and no issues yet!
