Simply doing the habit of reading pwm /control IC datasheets there are always a list of protections with acronyms like OVP (over voltage protection) , OCP (over current protection), SCP (short circuit protection), UVLO (under voltage lock out) and these are achieved with feedback loop (V too high, V too low) and compared / balanced with Mosfet current via Current sense pin input on primary, when there is high current on mosfet and low V on output the alarm bell rings and pwm stops until the next IC start (remove - reinsert power).. this is poor theory, i'm not the expert of psu designs, never been lucky of finding broken tv with bad PS..

Update time! So the only diodes I could get quickly were 20A versions, and a quick suggests this is OK to do. So I ordered those, whacked them in and the TV works! I'm going to run it for a while to make sure it stays happy, but so far so good.

Also, I missed disconnecting the ribbon cable that goes to the IR receiver, and damaged the end of the cable, breaking a trace. I cut off the broken bit, and was carefully able to shave the ribbon cable's top layer and expose the traces again. All 100% now.

        Thanks everyone for your input.

Well, that's good, as I expected, replace these two diodes and everything will work.
