Old LG LCD TV slowly dying

Maybe that isn't the best way to put it, since I've had zero problems with it throughout the years, but it looks like it's on its way to hell.

LG 42LG5000 tv, about 5-6 years old, has started causing problems two days ago. A minute after turning it on, the colors start to brighten up drastically, leading to a washed/gray-ish screen.

I know I can't fix the problem myself, I would just like to know what to expect when I take it to the shop in a couple of days. Is this a cheap fix that's worth it, or must some expensive part be replaced and I'm better off looking for a new TV?

    Here are some images.

Looks like a possible gamma chip--what does it look like with a proper picture?

What do you mean with a proper picture? During a movie playback, for instance?

Yes, that would help, so we can see e.g. how skin tone colours change.

i'm guessing he means with a actual scene of a movie/tv programme etc to see how other colours react

Sorry for the late reply, I didn't want to do it yesterday as I was waiting for some natural light to fill the room.

Unfortunately, I can't deliver any images of HD content, as my PC is currently not hooked up to the TV. So, here are two from the movie The Nut Job (.avi format, via a Phillips DVD player). I also can't deliver any comparison images, because the TV craps out too soon. So the only comparison I can provide is a screenshot taken from the same file, similar timestamp, but from my PC.

That definitely looks like a gamma reference chip fault to me, can you post some pictures of the boards inside your TV? And do you have a digital multimeter available to test things with?
