    Help!!!LG Plasma Problems; Rookie mistake.

Hey everyone I am a new member here. I came across your forum while investigating what happened to my LG Plasma TV. It seemed that 3 out of 4 hits came back to you here @ BadCaps.net so I figured I would try to tap some of the knowledge and expertise I see from the members here. I actually became interested in electronics as a hobby a few years ago as I work on electrical panels/switchboards and I went to school for computers...this seemed to bridge some gaps in my knowledge. I am however basically a self taught newbie here. and I need lots of help at the moment figuring out where to start on this disaster.

OK. To begin my LG50PG20-UA plasma TV's picture suddenly went out while watching TV the other day. The power light and sound still work. No menu, or input picture of any kind (black screen). After investigating this a bit I found that power supply, fuses, or the y sus board where my likely candidates for common failure. I took the back panel off and proceeded to check all of the fuses on the PS, y sus, and z sus. They all looked good even the smaller "micro" fuses I found the boards all checked out.

Next I checked the voltages going into the y and z sus boards. I got 193V, 59V, and 5.0V. Again the power supply to both seemed to be ok. I checked for visual damage to caps or burns on the topside only of the board (did not remove) and I did not see any. I then let the unit run for 15 or 20 min. Mostly to see if it was getting hot (or staying cold). I did not notice a marked change in the temperature of the heat sinks on the y sus or y buffer boards. One of the heat sinks on the z sus board was not as warm as the others but warmer than room temp.

At this time or around then I noted voltage on the y buffers leaving to the TV ribbon cable at about 52V. The voltage to the ribbons off the x sus was about 78V. This is when disaster or my own idiocy got the better of me. I decided to check the voltages on the transistors on the cooler heat sink on the z sus board. I was having trouble getting a reading on one when I accidently shorted the base and an emitter together. This blew the main fuse on the z sus board. Who knows what else? Oh boy...what did I do here? Where to start fixing this mess.

So my uneducated guess is that the y sus was the problem originally, but I wanted to further check it because finding the part (new $220) was not as easy as I thought (out of stock) or affordable. Plus I couldn't find visual proof of it being burnt and didn't know its correct output value to the y buffer either or other test procedures. After I shorted out the z sus board the voltage to the y buffer dropped to 14 or 15v. I don't know if the y sus finally gave out more or if it is a symptom of frying out the z sus? The input voltage to both boards from the supply still checks out ok.

So can I fix the x sus with a new fuse? The leads (on transistor) did not melt but did arc a bit before fuse burnt up. I know the fuse is bad. Can I test the transistor etc? I am not an expert solderer, but I do have one and could do a fuse repair (soldered in there) maybe 1 transistor not a bunch etc. I'm still learning here, and a bit timid after my mistake here. So whats your advice from here guys? I made things harder on my self for sure.

Unfortunately, I cant afford to pay someone else to fix it....So its going to have to be a DIY job and waiting on parts etc. is going to be half the fun! Not to mention dealing with a rookie unsure repair man LOL. Yeah! Thanks a lot for any help offered in advance. I may need it

Re: Help!!!LG Plasma Problems; Rookie mistake.

I found out that these boards may not be that common. Only 1 other set uses the same boards. I don't know if that factors into availability or not? I sure don't know who to trust for used or aftermarket parts. So any help would be appreciated as to where I may find parts. We don't have many electronics stores here in Denver worth a damn. Boulder has one. But hell gas would kill you there. Anyway....

Training manual. Page 75 for y buffer tests. God knows what's been damaged, test across all combinations of 2 legs on the transistor you shorted and see if it's blown. usually they go dead short.

There may be other tests within this guide. Pot luck on Ebay I think, seems to be some reasonably priced boards but with no photos or part numbers of your ysus, zsus and y upper/lower boards, hard to tell how cheap you'll get out of it.

i always use paypal just in case a dispute is needed for a dud board.

The guide gives you diode mode test results so hopefully you may figure out what may be ok.

      I would test buffers, y and Z.

      All I can help with.

A funny fuse story – Lumix LX100 II
        by corrize
Hello, I disassembled this dead camera, and found this WTF… Two fuses soldered one above the other !
I was pretty sure nobody touched it before, but that can't be from factory. There is flux, and capacitor is probably missing.
        The other weird thing : the fuses are « G » fuse : (0.75A – 8V), seems very low. The original fuse should be « O » : (32V 2,5A).
There is « O » mark beside. All fuses have the same mark letter on main board. So, I can deduce it's a « O » fuse.
And this correspond to the issus I saw : when I plug the battery, I measure the voltage dropping...

Samsung UE46ES8000 Blown fuse but no other signs of short
        by jesterace
Hi I wonder if anyone might be able to steer me in the right direction. I have this Samsung UE46ES8000 TV and it went bang during use. The main fuse on the PSU board is open. I've checked every diode/mosfet/transistor I can see and nothing appears to be short to cause the fuse to go. The DC output of the bridge rectifier is not short either. I've seen online that some of these models are known for having their PFC mosfet or other mosfets shorting and blowing the fuse but i'm not seeing that here. If anyone aware of these models having any issues to cause this? I'm reluctant to just replace the...

Help replacing fuse on my Mimaki CJV300-160 vinyl printer
        by jshhh
        Hi guys,

I'm inexperienced with electronics repairs, I've done a little bit of soldering caps and whatnot, but i have a blown fuse on this mimaki printer I got which I have bought a replacement for.

How do I remove this type of fuse (see picture)...it kinda looks like it would pull out of that bracket but it didn't come at first pull and I didn't want to brute force it incase it's soldered on there like most of the rest of the components.

Anybody know how to remove this type of fuse?

(The fuse is toward the bottom of the image labeled F2)...

Argon SA1 audio amplifier power-supply - fuse blown after fixing the short?
        by Babbar
I found a project in the electronics trash yesterday. A nice Argon SA1 audio amp with some electrical issue. Took it apart and saw that the 4A250V fuse was blown so started lifting components to find the short. Eventually got to two MOSFETs (model FTA14N50C) that are shorted and when i took them out the short was gone.

Now i didn't have any replacements of the same model of course but i found a couple with pretty similar spec i thought (K10A60D & K12A50D) and put them in. Also replaced the blown fuse with a 3.5A250V one. Checked another time for short circuit and plugged it in....

        Matsui 175S microwave fuse replacement
        by drykid
        Hi,

I recently picked up a used Matsui 175S microwave that was powering up (starts, turntable rotates) but not heating. From looking online the most likely culprit was the fuse, but unfortunately in this one the fuse had heated up and fused with the (badly designed) fuse holder and couldn't be removed. I guess this might indicate further issues beyond the fuse itself but at this stage I just want to replace the fuse and see how I go from there.

Anyway since I couldn't get out the fuse itself the easiest fix was to replace the fuse holder assembly that runs between the...
