when a panel driver ic goes horribly wrong. ..

Samsung 52 inch lcd panel tape carrier ic goes into thermal short and melts itself into the plastic panel frame. Lol.

Did I leave the soldering iron on?

You must have a sad, sad boring life if you hate on people harmlessly enjoying life with an animal costume.

Sometimes you need to break shit to fix it.... Thats why my lawnmower doesn't have a deadman switch or engine brake anymore

Mind sharing model # of set? Curious how new it is... So many new LED-LCD and LCD TVs with driver chip faults.

I'm sure there's a very good reason those ic's are on the ribbon instead of a few inches the other way and on the driver board with proper thermal treatment but I can't fathom it.

1920x1080p display, 5760 sub pixels (1920 RGB), 10 ribbons, you need 576 bond wires per ribbon. At 0.1mm spacing on PCB (generally a minimum) you need 56 mm per panel driver, plus other pins. Not really practical; quite expensive.

I knew there had to be a good reason

Why can they manage on ribbon and not on pcb ?

I think it's because ribbons are a lot smaller so it's easier to manufacture them to tight tolerances, a large panel PCB on the other hand is a lot more difficult.

I saw a 52" Sharp which looked like it had the PCB->tab bonds replaced with locking ribbon connectors. I liked that a lot, but I'm sure it's a lot more expensive. The chips were still on ribbons.

2008 model. They usually have tab bond issues rather than panel faults...
